    Last time I bought a standalone device, I bought an XGODY - no, I'd not
    heard of them before either, but it came with a bigger screen and for a
    lot lower price than any of the alternatives, as well as bluetooth
    connectivity and an FM tramsmitter (so I could in theory use it to get a smartphone to play through the car which doesn't have that facility -
    also, which is what I used it for mostly, am mp3 player). Yes, it had
    the facility to enter assorted lorry (truck) parameters, presumably so
    it could select routes that take those into account. Came with maps of
    most of the world; I only used the UK ones, but they seemed fine. 3D
    views if wanted, also lane markings/signage at many exits. I was very
    pleased with it - yes some slight quirks, but easily got used to.

    Back in the '90s when I was driving OTR I would have killed for one of
    those. Paper maps were good as far as they went. When you called the
    consignee and asked for local directions you hoped you weren't talking to
    a secretary who described the route she took with her Honda Civic.

    Cellphones would have been great too. Nothing like looking for a working payphone when you're driving a 65' long RV.

    Yes; I meant, they don't even give map data, they certainly don't have
    traffic info, roadworks, etcetera. The map data has to be in the
    receiving device, and traffic data and the like, if it displays that,
    must come from some other source, such as cellular or RDS if any
    stations still send it via that.

    Yes. It's a mystery to me how My GO app gets its data. I am not sure
    that it is via the Internet at all. It has asked me 'is there still a
    speed camera there' and it absolutely phones home so users in traffic
    jams notify it of the fact.

    Googling implies it uses an API to connect over the internet. It cannot
    be a lot of data as it never shows up in usage, much

    - then it can't be RDS, as that's only one-way, so I _presume_ it _must_
    be via the internet. When you say it doesn't show up in usage, *much*,
    do you mean that it does show up a little? (Or, maybe, whatever monitors
    your usage doesn't identify when it's a small amount.)

    It is documented that TomTom does this. Aggregated data from many users.
    It is opt-out: but in that case you also do not receive traffic info.

    They also use public traffic information from the country authorities.
