I recently set up a new desktop computer running Windows 8.1, and I was pleasantly surprised. The following apps can be run:
- Thunderbird 115.18
- Firefox
- Chrome
- Edge
- LibreOffice 25.2.7.2
- CutePDF
Defender updates automatically.
Windows no longer updates!
I could install new fonts from Windows 11, but this will have to wait
until next week.
You need CutePDF because there is no option to save as a PDF in
LibreOffice (the version for Windows 8.1). All the major browsers — Firefox, Chrome and Edge — have a print/save to PDF option. I'm sure Office has this option too, but I haven't tried it as I don't have a compatible version.

I have done some more work in Windows 8.1:
1) I copied fonts from Windows 11 to Windows 8.1.
2) I changed the wallpaper to resemble that of Windows 11.
3) I installed a compatible Vivaldi browser.
4) I installed Adobe Acrobat Professional XI.
5) I recreated my PDF test page (a fillable form) in Acrobat Pro (see
the link <

7) Installed .NET version 8 to develop C# applications.
TODO list for next week:
- Install C/C++ compilers.
- Install MySQL.
- Install PHP.
- Install the Apache web server.
It works really well!
PS: Although you don't get any new updates, old updates still keep
coming. I got nearly 200 such updates!
