Another brilliant story taking aim at corporatism, a far more efficiant
and effective way of subjugating nations and individuals than war.
Earth has fallen into decline and an alien controlled corporation
referred to as the Company has seized on this as an opportunity to
profit from the remaining population by relocating them to Mars and then
to Pluto as what effectively amounts to a low paid and highly taxed
slave labour force.
The children of the workers of the Company are given a basic education >sufficient enough for them to perform the work that will be assigned to >them, based on what level they are grouped within, As, Bs, Cs and Ds,
and brainwashed to serve and worship the Company and its management,
only being taught what they need to know and nothing more.
This is the ideology of Marxist Corporatism, which forms the basis of >fascism. It is a socialist ideology which treats the workers as slaves
to the ruling elite, who are exemplified as the Marxist Pigs in George >Orwell's Animal farm, and the Alphas, Betas, Gammas, and Deltas in Aldus >Huxley's Brave New World.
This is not a capitalist system which is being represented. Capitalism >encourages entrepreneurship and advancement based on merit, but their is
no freedom to work for yourself or start a competing business on Pluto
nor is there a route to promotion. Once a D you are always a D until you >die, and when you do so your offspring must pay death taxes which take
every penny from them leaving them suicidal, as is seen at the start of
the story.
Just like the fascist corporatist Federation in Blake's 7, which debuted
on BBC1 in the following year, and visuals and characterisation of this >story are very reminiscent of it, the Company uses mind altering gas
pumped into the air conditioning system to suppress rebellion and
revelation by instilling a sense of fear into the minds of everyone that >breaths it and causing the rebels to act like cowards who have to be
forced to fight for their freedom by the Doctor and Leela.
As in George Orwell’s 1984, and modern woke ideology, the Company also >uses public hate campaigns, spectacles and executions to motivate the >people, who call themselves Comrades just like in and Marxist state, to
work and take their minds away from their suffering and taxation.
There is also the equivalent to the fate of Vaporisation in 1984 after >dissidents have been tracked, captured and re-educated to accept and
worship the Company's ideology after which they are Steamed. The Doctor
is captured and almost has his mind erased and reprogrammed when
subjected to this fate, and Leela is also captured and after resisting
is sentenced to immediate Steaming.
This story features Michael Keating, who passed away on Thursday, Villa
from Blake's 7, in the supporting role of Goudry who forms part of a
group of workers who have escaped the primary city which has a
population of about 50,000,000, into the underground tunnels because
they would not have been able to pay their taxes and survive if they >continued living above.
Nobody but the top management is allowed to set foot on the surface of
Pluto and see any of the artificial suns which the Company has built and >fuels, each serving one of 6 one kilometre tall city towers.
The Doctor arrives on the 9th planet of the Solar System, Pluto, along
with Leela, and, after saving Cordo from jumping to his death off one of
the towers, they are mistaken for agents from another company who want
to ferment a revolution, which in the course of events they end up >accomplishing and overthrow the company top level management and its
alien boss, known as the Collector, after the Doctor shuts down the mind >altering rebellion suppressing gas from being pumped into the city, and >fakes a public video announcement telling the workers the management
have all been toppled and are now bing held captive so there is nothing
to stop them from revolting. He then hacks into the Company's computer
and programmes it to pay a tax on productivity which makes the Company
go bankrupt and forces the Collector to liquidate both the Company and >himself.
K9 takes his first outing outside of the TARDIS in this story and helps
to defend and save both the Doctor and Leela.
After the revolution is accomplished the Doctor suggests the colonists >return to Earth, which should have recovered by now, using the Company >fighters to take them there, and rebuild, which of course would require
a lot of work, but this time it would serve them a individuals instead
of others. Entrepreneurship and meritocracy at work.
Back in the TARDIS the Doctor resumes the chess game he was playing
against Leela and K9 before they landed on Pluto. After deriding K9
earkuer who then trapped him in check mate in 6 moves, the Doctor upsets
the board by making the TARDIS suddenly jerk from one side to the other >knocking his hatstand, Leela, and the chess pieces to the ground.
So, just like in Image of the Fendahl, once again Leela is ends up lying
on the TARDIS floor. I wonder if that is the reason why she decided to >leave?
The Sun Makers reflects the degenerate ideology and practice of Marxism >where the huge kilometre high cities lit by artificial suns are
analogous to the huge tower blocks built by the Communists in Siberia to >house workers for state controlled (not necessarily owned) oil, gas,
mining, and other ruling party affiliated corporations, which are heated
by communal central heating systems heated by plants located on the >outskirts of the corporate run cities which the corporations tax the
workers to run and fuel. The same corporate mentality also exist in
Marxist China.
The premise of The Sun Makers reflects the economic situation Britain
was under during the Heath, Wilson, and Callaghan movements of the 1970s >when the story was written.
Britain was brought into decline by elitist corporate greed, state >controlled utilities, coal mines, petroleum producers, and other public >bodies, which treated their workers as a commodity and taxed them to the >hilt. After 50 years since the story was written this decline has not >changed much under both Labour and Conservative governments.
Great acting from Tom Baker and Louise Jameson once again with Leela and
K9 showing the Doctor that what he claims is not always correct. This
makes it clear to viewers that because someone is portrayed as an
authority figure they should be judged on their own merits and not on
the basis of position there hold.
There is also good world-building which dominates every conversation in
this story rather than trivial irrelevant soap opera inserted into the
show by degenerates like Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall. The word >degenerate itself also once again appears in the dialogue.
Next week The Underworld, or Jason and the Argonauts in space.

Yes, it's basically a sci-fi version of Jason's quest...
deliberately so.
Doctor Who does Greek mythology. Something tells me
you'll go high with that one! ;-)

Maybe, but TV at the time was like that for women in general. At least
she doesn't have to twist her ankle all the time.

Oh damn, that's another title that the Target novelisations
have corrupted by adding "The" to the beginning of and making
their version more popular. "Underworld" it is, just like
"Horror of Fang Rock", "Image of the Fendahl" and "Pyramids of
Mars". Then of course there's novelisations like "The Cave
Monsters" which are not even named based on the original
titles.
