Emmy Awards Will Be Free to Watch for the Next 6 Years
After Massive Prime Video Streaming Deal
    ------------------------------------------------------
Emmys have officially ditched broadcast TV for a historic
Prime Video streaming deal. Viewers will now get to watch
the popular awards event for free.

Amazon has acquired the global rights to the Primetime
Emmy Awards to stream the event for the next six years,
according to the streamer's press site. The big news comes
just weeks after early reports hinted that the event could
move away from traditional broadcast after more than
    75 years.

Before the new deal, the prestigious awards ceremony aired
on ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC for over three decades on a
    rotational basis.

How much is the Amazon and Emmy Awards deal estimated to be
    worth?
The massive deal between Amazon and the Television Academy
is reported to be worth over $120 million for six years.
It's expected to be more than $20 million per year. Head of
Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Mike Hopkins, expressed
his excitement after closing the deal.

"We thought we could increase the viewership, bring in a
younger audience, work with the Academy to put a lot more
energy, and maybe look at the production itself to try to
innovate," he said. He also made it clear that the new
strategy is to put Emmys "on a global growth and relevance"
which wasn't possible to do "when it was spinning from
network to network and then distributed in various ways
    around the world."

Cris Abrego, Television Academy chair, mentioned an
important reason behind partnering with Amazon instead of
renewing the decades-old traditional broadcast deal. "I felt
strongly from the outset that this was an opportunity to
    rethink the model," he said.

Abrego added, "As television and the industry is evolving,
the telecast and much like the Academy needed to evolve, and
so having a singular home was my goal from the outset."

The 78th Emmy Awards aired last month on NBC. The event took
place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
