A fire had been burning in the vicinity but was thought to be far enough
away that the military exercises could proceed safely. Then the fire accelerated and jumped across the intervening gap almost instantaneously.
I can identify with that. My brother and I went to Sturgis SD for Bike
Week in 1994 and were camping outside of town. A grass fire started near
our campsite and we were urged to evacuate; it was hot and dry. Luckily,
the fire department got there very quickly and knocked the fire down and
we were able to stay put, although we were well on the way to packing up
my brother's pickup when we got the all-clear.
Condolences to the families of the 4 dead men. I don't envy the injured
men: many are apparently badly burned and I know that's a very painful
thing to endure and a long road to recovery.
