Popular 1990s TV sitcom Coach could be making a comeback.
Deadline reported Wednesday that NBC wants to reboot the show created by
Barry Kemp that starred Craig T. Nelson following its successful
nine-season run on ABC.
The original show, which ran from 1989 to 1997, saw Nelson portray
Hayden Fox, the head coach of the fictional college football team
Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles, who later coached the fake
NFL expansion club Orlando Breakers.
Ty Burrell, who played goofy real estate agent and self-described "cool
dad" Phil Dunphy on ABC sitcom Modern Family, is set to executive
produce the reboot with the intention of starring as the title character
if the series officially goes forward.
Would feature basketball program rebuild
According to the report, the legendary coach returns home to Minnesota
to rebuild the basketball program at his alma mater as well as reconnect
with the community.
The potential reboot will see brothers Daniel and Matthew Libman write
the episodes and executive produce the show with Burrell and John Davis
and John Fox of Davis Entertainment.
The revamped Coach could mark the first on-screen role for Burrell since
the end of Modern Family, which ran from 2009 to 2020.
A 13-episode reboot of Coach was planned for 2015, with Nelson reprising
his role and Bill Fagerbakke, who played the dim-witted assistant
football coach Michael "Dauber" Dybinski in the original run.
The premise of the last revival was Fox had came out of retirement to
become an assistant coach to his son Tim -- played by Andrew Ridings --
at an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania. One episode was filmed before
NBC decided not to move forward with the project.
