• Home made chicken soup, home made sourdough bread tonight 9/2

    From Ed P@esp@snet.n to rec.food.cooking on Wed Sep 2 22:27:06 2026
    From Newsgroup: rec.food.cooking

Yes, that is what I had, but I did not make it. My son called about 5
o'clock and said he had something for me. He brought that over.

His wife is getting into baking sourdough bread and the half loaf she
sent over is one of the first. Pretty good too. I put some in the
toaster to heat it, not to actually toast.

Enough to have again, probably Friday night.

Home made egg noodles? Most folks don't bother, but it's not that much
extra work, and it's so much better. If I ordered chicken soup at a restaurant, and it came with noodles from a bag, I'd never eat there again.

You never go to a restaurant anyway. That's way too expensive for a
    redneck. (No, McDonalds, Popeye's, Zippy's, Muffy's and Dickie's
    aren't restaurants, Bryan.)

I made some chicken soup with a Costco roast chicken. I just used a thigh/leg piece in the slow cooker. I wanted some tomato in there but there was no tomato
so I used some Korean chili pepper for some coloring. My daughter made some bread

No. It's sourdough. I'm not a fan, but my wife is, and she eats more
bread. The only bread I really like is the Italian bread from actual Italian-American bakeries. Look what your AI buddy has to say.

    *****
Is Aldi sourdough bread real sourdough or not?
    AI Overview
Yes, Aldi’s core artisan sourdough loaves are considered real sourdough because they use a traditional sourdough culture and contain no added commercial yeast.
    Ingredients and Authenticity

Clean labels: The standard round and square artisan sourdough
loaves sold under Aldi’s Specially Selected brand list just three main ingredients: flour, water, and sea salt, plus a sourdough culture.
No commercial yeast: Authentic fermentation relies entirely on wild
yeast and bacteria from the starter culture rather than fast-acting
    commercial baker's yeast.

    1. The Piefather - Reuben Pie (Rosebery NSW)
    2. North End Bakehouse Shepparton Lamb Souvlaki Pie (VIC)
    3. Banana Boogie Bakery Cheeseburger Pie (Belair SA)
    4. Whittlesea Bakehouse Chilli Ned Kelly Pie (VIC)
    5. Buddy Bakery Melton - Chunky Steak Pie (VIC)
    6. Country Cob Bakery Springvale Steak & Kidney (VIC)
    7. BAKETICO/Wonder Pies Lasagne Pie (VIC)
    8. The Piefather - Plain Mince Pie (Rosebery NSW)
    9. The Bakehouse Aldinga Curried Scallop Pie (SA)
    10. Brown Sugar Bakery Beef Stroganoff Pie (NSW)

All nice, but a 6"-high fresh hamburger tops all. With meat, bacon,
lettuce, onion, beetroot, sauce, garlic, tomato, pepper,
capsicum, lottsa salt, with buns properly toasted, and beer to wash it
    down.

After work long ago at 1am we would get this at "Hamburger Max" a
sleazy joint with Max making the burgers from a huge pile of ground
beef. Lottsa low life in the joint, hazy with cigarette smoke. Then
repair to the car, with a CB radio and proceed to insult all truck
drivers within range. Ahhh them were the nights!

No. It's sourdough. I'm not a fan, but my wife is, and she eats more
bread. The only bread I really like is the Italian bread from actual >Italian-American bakeries. Look what your AI buddy has to say.

Is Aldi sourdough bread real sourdough or not?
    AI Overview
Yes, Aldi’s core artisan sourdough loaves are considered real sourdough >because they use a traditional sourdough culture and contain no added >commercial yeast.
    Ingredients and Authenticity

Clean labels: The standard round and square artisan sourdough
loaves sold under Aldi’s Specially Selected brand list just three main >ingredients: flour, water, and sea salt, plus a sourdough culture.
No commercial yeast: Authentic fermentation relies entirely on wild
yeast and bacteria from the starter culture rather than fast-acting >commercial baker's yeast.
    *****

Yes, then it's real sourdough bread, which is very rare at
    supermarkets.

Excuse me. Sourdough bread is made with live fermented yeast. I don't
know why you think a bakery, even in a supermarket, could not do that.

Because it's more work. Supermarkets don't like more work. They're
only interested in money. All Publix sourdough bread contains
commercial yeast, meaning it's not sourdough bread. Check the
ingredient list for yourself when you can.

Public store bakery sourdough is as you described, but their organic is
made with sourdough starter, as is ALDI's. In store bakeries are almost >never any good.

That ALDI label looks good. By the way, not all bread that ALDI call
sourdough is real. The proof is in the label. That leaves Publix to be
    checked.

It's bread and bread is generally made of wheat. The labels states ingredients: wheat flour and then goes on to state contains wheat.

You only need wheat, water/milk, salt and a rising agent, but the
ingredient list of supermarket bread can be a mile long. Very goofy

Disposable income is the total money you have left over after you
subtract mandatory taxes and government deductions from your gross earnings.

Disposable income is your total money left after paying taxes, while discretionary income is what remains after you pay taxes and essential

cheese soup tomorrow.  I wish I had some sourdough bread to
lightly toast and dunk in it.

Publix sells sourdough bread, your Majesty.

Sourfaux bread more likely. I don't think any supermarket sells
    sourdough bread.

The thing underneath all that butter is a piece of sourdough bread
    from ALDI.

Early for pumpkin pie, but I can allow it...

It was sweet potato pie, made at the request of our son, who loves it. I
don't eat that or pumpkin pie.

    AI Overview

Disposable income is the total money you have left over after you
subtract mandatory taxes and government deductions from your gross
    earnings.

    There's the rub alrighty.

Our "giverment" is really more of a euro-servile "takerment".

Disposable income is your total money left after paying taxes, while discretionary income is what remains after you pay taxes and
essential living expenses like rent and food.

    Lookie...Jack updated their tacos!

    ;-)

When they came out with their taco, I thought it was some pretty
awful food. Greasy shell that was mostly not crispy but soggy with
a weird filling that wasn't really identifiable. OTOH, I thought
it was a brilliant idea where you could get a new alternate kind
of food that could be prepared quickly from frozen using the
available equipment and materials. My wife and I will still eat
one each occasionally, we had some last night. Why? I don't know.

I found them way back in the 70s - when tacos were still not
    "trending" at all.

One abides when choice is nil.
Sure, if you're starving. Otherwise, there isn't another item I can

"What’s in a Jack in the Box taco?
According to the Jack in the Box website, their crunchy tacos feature “melty American cheese, shredded lettuce, and [their] signature taco sauce.” Although the description does not mention beef, the tacos include what one TikToker refers to as a “meat concoction.”
According to a comprehensive list of the ingredients in these
cult-favorite tacos, this concoction contains beef, ground dark
chicken, textured vegetable protein (soy flour and caramel color), and
defatted soy grits, a form of processed soybeans. Now it’s a bit
clearer why people often describe these tacos as somewhat dubious." https://youtu.be/q0yB8JlQqwo?t=102
