Yes, a little early with the inquiry, but your plans for the evening
    meal? Weekend leftovers?

I had a very late breakfast and as I was finishing stuffing my face
my neighbor arrived with a barbecue sandwich. I thanked him profusely
and into the 'frig it went to be enjoyed this evening; probably with
some potato chips and a diet drink, too.

Potato chips and a diet drink sounds like a dinner for an 8 year old.

I had a busy day so this is a very late lunch/early dinner. Thinly
sliced deli roast beef on small buttered toasted French rolls heated
under the oven broiler. Topped with a little Monterey Jack cheese
(should have been Provolone but I neglected to buy any) and the roast
beef. Normally I would have this with some potato chips but I don't
have any. I made two sandwiches; one of them will be saved for lunch tomorrow.

Do you have something against potato chips. Potato salad would be great,
but I don't have any made, plus a large dill pickle on the side would have been welcomed, but neither were included with the sandwich.

That's the most appetizing thing she's posted in memory. I wish that I
had a barbecue sandwich and potato chips. Dinner here will be leftover spaghetti with meat sauce. The spaghetti has been in the fridge
retrograding for 23 hours. By dinner it'll be 24. Maybe I should saute
some mushrooms to add. To drink will be Svedka and lemonade made with
allulose syrup. My weight is dropping slowly enough that I'm sure my
doctor will do the final increase in Wegovy dose.

I've never had supermarket chips with dinner and before RFC I'd never

I am making a small shepherds pie. There is only 3/4 lb of meat and it
is being cooked in a loaf pan. FFIW this shepherd is eating beef. ;-)

I did a little culinary multitasking. I started off boiling some
potatoes for the topping and while they were cooking I mixed up the
banana bread batter. I had four over ripe bananas to use up. It went
into the oven and I started on the filling. The banana bread is out and cooling and the shepherds pie is in the oven. Looking forward to it.

Nah, an 8 year old won't go for a diet drink, they want the sugar.

I don't doubt that they enjoy the sweetness but I might suggest that the preference for sugar over diet drinks is that the artificial sweeteners
have a nasty taste. I still remember my first taste of a diet drink
from when I was 14 or 15. I was at a girlfriend's place and he parents
ordered Chinese food. I have to admit that Chinese food was a new one

Oh no. Does this mean I have something in common with Bruce. I have

Potato chips and a diet drink sounds like a dinner for an 8 year old.

Nah, an 8 year old won't go for a diet drink, they want the sugar.

Ain't that the truth? And a handful of cookies would have been their
    ideal dinner.

I was drinking diet drinks for over a decade but I've lost my taste for them recently. It's kind of a funny thing but I've learned to listen to what my body wants.

I recently was frying some food and splashed some hot oil on myself. I couldn't believe that I did that - such a rookie mistake!

Apart from a lot of parents who stuff their kids with things that will guarantee diabetes and obesity later in life, aren't there also a lot

    California?

Yes, there are. I was indulging in a bit of humor. I can see

I have similar feelings about asparagus. I don't know why anyone would
hate it, but some people do.

As far as I am concerned it is their loss. I like a lot of vegetables.
Some I like more than others. I am not a huge fan of carrots but eat
them. Beets are a little lower on my list, along with cabbage. I keep hearing about greens but they aren't the sort of thing I would put on my bucket list. Swiss chard may be responsible for that. Lima beans...
forget it. Turnips, boiled parsnips... good stuff for horses but I am
    not interested.

Mixed reaction to some veggies. I once had Broccoli rabe in a restaurant
that was owned and operated by Italians but was not billed as an Italian restaurant. One meal I had there came with rabe and I was not at all impressed. A few months later I was in another restaurant and had
ordered salmon. It came with rabe. I bit the bullet. It came with the
meal so I figured I could eat it first and get it over with and
everything after that would be better. I was surprised how good that
    rabe was.

    Tab had a weird after-taste.

    Jill

This is what AI has to say about Tab diet cola. I thought it was awful, too, Jill.

Why Tab Diet Coke Had an Odd Aftertaste for Some People
The “odd” or metallic aftertaste many people remembered from Tab was a direct
result of its main sweetener — sodium saccharin — and the way it interacts with
    the palate.

    Saccharin’s signature flavor
When Tab launched in 1963, it was sweetened primarily with a blend of saccharin and sodium cyclamate.

Later, after cyclamate was banned in the U.S. in 1969, saccharin became the sole
    sweetener.

Unlike modern sweeteners such as aspartame or sucralose, which aim to mimic sugar’s
clean sweetness, saccharin has its own distinct personality.

Initial sweetness: sharp and intense on the tongue

Lingering metallic or slightly bitter finish: this was the “bite” that made Tab
    unique.

This metallic note was not an accident — it was an inherent property of saccharin’s
chemical structure. Many people found it appealing, but others found it unpleasant
    or “odd.”

    Other contributing factors

Tab’s flavor base also included citrus and subtle spice notes, but the sweetener
    dominated the taste profile.

The aggressive carbonation and lack of syrupy residue made the metallic aftertaste
more noticeable compared to other diet sodas.

    Why it was so memorable

Because Tab was designed to be different from Coke and Diet Coke, it wasn’t formulated
to please everyone — it was meant to stand out. The saccharin “bite” became part
of its brand identity, and for some, that metallic finish was a defining, unforgettable
    characteristic.

    In short:
The odd aftertaste came from saccharin’s natural metallic finish, which was unavoidable
in Tab’s formula and set it apart from other diet colas. This was both its signature
and the source of its polarizing reputation.

Tab was truly nasty as were all the saccharin drinks of the era. But, I reckon some people weren't repelled by the taste. I always found
saccharin in any form a thing to avoid, from the 1960's on.

However, if they had added a small amount of Sulphuric acid, it may have transformed the drink enough to have made a fan of her royal Majesty.
But they only catered to the masses and fads they had created.

It was, as always, driven by "make the most money you can, as quickly as
you can, and get the fuck out before the fad collapses"

I have similar feelings about asparagus. I don't know why anyone would
hate it, but some people do.

They hate it just like you hate a lot of vegetables. That you're

As far as I am concerned it is their loss. I like a lot of vegetables.
Some I like more than others. I am not a huge fan of carrots but eat

admit that I was unsympathetic. I like peas. I always liked them, even

I loved them as a child, but don't like them at all now. But like your opinion of carrots, I'll eat them and carrots if in a dish such as soup.
I do put peas and diced carrots in my chicken pot pie, which just recently I've started adding.

Beets are a little lower on my list, along with cabbage.

Cooked beets, NO! But pickled beets? Yes please, cabbage, too.

Pickled, no. Roasted? Yes. Cabbage is also good roasted,
although it's good prepared in a variety of ways.

I keep hearing about greens but they aren't the sort of thing I would put >> on my bucket list. Swiss chard may be responsible for that. Lima beans... >> forget it. Turnips, boiled parsnips... good stuff for horses but I am

I'm a big fan of turnip greens, but not mustard greens, but I've never eaten Swiss chard. Turnips and parsnips, no thank you.

Chard tastes somewhat like beets, as one would expect.

Turnips are good pickled. I haven't had parsnips in a long, long
time. As I recall, they were like woody, boring carrots.

Chef, did your doctors tell you exactly what type of melanoma you have?

You may not believe me, but I know quite a bit about that particular subject.

They did not say other than stage zero, but assured me that I was fine.
The original biopsy had already gotten it all. I'll be getting checked
every 3 months for new ones popping up.

I have to replace the furnace at the little house. Last fall I replaced
the control board and igniter, and that gave it another season, but this
year it was dead again, and it's 29 years old, so it really needed to be replaced. I got two bids, and one was much cheaper than the other for
the same unit. One place wanted $3256, and the other was only $2683. The cheaper one was the company that replaced ours in this house last year.

The charcoal is starting right now, and in a few minuted a Prime strip
steak goes on the grill. And here it is! https://photos.app.goo.gl/iQy8G4bEuQ6UYZay7

Try curried parsnip soup! It's delicious.

    Even if it is boiled?

It's very simple. Onion, garlic, 2-3 parsnips, a couple of potatoes
and vegetable stock. Simmer until tender, blitz and add curry paste.

I will give it a try.
    thanks

I used to wear that when I was on the mainland and had a job interview. I'd also
wear a tie. I haven't worn a long-sleeve shirt since the late 80's. People that wear that kind of shirt have something to hide, either that, or they're parking valets.

That is about the age my brother was when he could not go out trick or treating unless he ate his peas. He still whines about it. I have to
    admit that I was unsympathetic.

I hope that he did little things to get revenge on your parents.

TIAD. Canned peas are only fit to slop a pig, but hey, you used to be a

I guess some people must have liked it because it was around for years before it was finally discontinued. Personally, I thought it was

Dr.Pepper is actually not bad, perhaps even better than the regular cloyingly sweet Dr.Pepper.

I agree with you there about Diet Dr. Pepper. My wife loves the stuff. I used to drink it but my tastes have changed regarding diet drinks these days. I prefer sugar-laden drinks or water/coffee.
