I am a bachelor for the night because my wife went to Toronto to attend
a book launch and at the invitation of the Lt. Governor. Between taking
her to the bus station, a dental appointment and some shopping I had a
pretty busy day and was resigned to a ham and cheese sandwich and a bowl
of butternut squash soup. Then my friend called to see if I was
interest in a motorcycle ride and grabbing dinner. He headed for
Niagara Falls but the Hwy 20 bridge was closed for construction. We
detoured to the Thorold Tunnel but traffic was stop and go through there
so we slipped off the highway and went along the canal road to the Greek Village. I was tempted to have moussaka but there was that problem of forgoing favourites like calamari and gyros. We opted to split an order
of calamari and then gyros. It was a good choice.

Dave, did you know you could start a diary? Diaries never get bored.

I've had calamari once and simply didn't taste anything, so I can say it's great or terrible. But oh, a great gyro! (I've had simply terrible gyros, too.)

The basics of frying calamari are pretty simple but the essential thing
is the timing. There is a fine line between undercooked and rubber.

I was lucky that I had a lot of good gyros in my early gyros days so I
had positive expectations. Then one day I had a negative experience. I
was having lunch with co-workers who had never had one. I talked them
into trying them. That was my first bad gyros and my co-workers were unimpressed. Another time we were headed to a local event and I had
heard that someone was selling gyros. I was jonesing for one. I found
the vendor and was all excited to order one. It was a major
disappointment. When you are expecting a good gyros it is exceptionally disappointing to get a bad one. I am happy to say that tonight's was a
    good one.

You also have to make sure it's not Japanese/Korean giant calamari
(Dosidicus gigas). It tastes bad, so its flavour is chemically
neutralised. Then an acceptable texture and flavour are added to it
    using artificial means.

    Only chumps love it.

People in this family love fried squid. It's pretty goofy.

How was the squid that you ate prepared?

Squid has a fairly mild flavor; it makes a good sushi topping.

It was just dredged in flour and cornmeal and fried and served with a
    very tasty tzatziki.>

Honestly, I don't remember as it was back when the dinosaurs roamed the
earth. I'd not hesitate to try it again, though.

I have had it grilled and it was excellent.
