Is it just me, or have you guys had a lot of people
who want laptops but then when they get them, what
fonts so big that web pages have a hard time rendering?
To the point of being almost unusable?

    AAAAAHHHHH !!!!!

Not trying to make a windows/linux feud, but in Linux I'm able to make the default font
larger irrespective of the remainder of the UI. So web pages look the same. But menus
are larger etc. It's one of the reasons I stay with Linux. I can liberally adjust things
    I couldn't in Windows.

However on the other side of things, my wife has windows 11 and rather than scale the
fonts large (fonts specifically), she adjusted the desktop resolution down to 1366x768
(from 1920x1080). I hate it, but she couldn't see anything in Quicken or Word, (her go to
    software).

I find it a sad state that MS seems to know that things are too small, that's why they
recommend 125% or 150% scaling. Rather than leave a HDPI resolution but scale up the UI
    alone.

Maybe I'm not savvy enough but it just seems wrong. With the post war baby-boomers coming
older and eye sight not 20-20 you'd think things like that would be a design to look into.

The last one was Linux. I scaled everything up and I had to
    scale up her browser too.

    brave-browser --force-device-scale-factor=1.5

In Linux, everything is customizable. Well almost.

Don't you notice that laptops' screens are
so small? They will hurt your eyes slowly.

People don't like tiny fonts from high-DPI screens without a scaling
factor; but mostly they tend to buy about 14" laptops with cheapo
1366x768 screens, so they don't have high-DPI screens to start with.

Maybe you should turn on the magnifying glass ? :-)

On the 4K 27" monitor, I had to set the scaling on that.
You'd need a microscope to see anything, otherwise. What I
got, was pretty well the only 4K monitor in stock at the time.

    The scroll-wheel can proportional-scale applications
and also the desktop. Going the custom font path, is
more likely to have text running into edges, if you
    overdo it.

It's too bad the "hidden AI" in the machine cannot
do these things for you :-) Maybe when Windows 12 shows up.
Think how many "doo-flickies" you will have to adjust
    on a Windows 12 service call :-) <CoPilot> "I can put
ranch dressing on your french fries!". <Customer> "Do it!".
"T, T, come quick, something happened to my W12 laptop"
and you hear snickering in the background of the call.

I think they are allergic to wires. If all they do
is surf and read eMail and demand 1/2" letters, they'd

I added my uncle's Gmail to Thunderbird. He had over *14.000* mails

Was he able to understand pressing the delete key too?

iirc 'select all' on the gmail website isn't the easiest thing to find.
I have a throwaway email on proton.me that I seldom visit. At some time
I must have registered with the Washington Post to read an article. I
remembered to save one email to unsubscribe before doing the bulk
    delete.

<ctrl><A> ain't that had to find

Which does nothing in the mail.google.com web interface. The current one
has a box with a pulldown to select all, but I don't think the older
versions did. proton.me has a similar box.

I was not talking about Thunderbird.

I can't stand web mail. But that is only me apparently.
    I use Thunderbird/Betterbird for a reason.

I showed him Ctrl+A and then Delete. I unsubscribed him to a lot of newsletters, so I can only hope there won't be so many mails when I
    check his laptop next time.

I seldom use the web interface. What arrives in gmail is automatically
pulled down and appears in my regular email account. However it isn't
deleted from gmail so if I think of it I go and take the trash out.

The proton.me account is not associated with my normal email but there is
    very little traffic.

My reading says that Gmail will automatically delete items older than 90 days. At least it does on mine. I'd love to have it keep old stuff longer.

Gmail deletes nothing, except spam and trash.

I also have trouble with the spam checkers too. They love pressing
junk on actual junk, give them a feeling of empowerment. But they
refuse to go into the junk folder and not-junk what is a
false positive. Eventually, everything goes into junk.
The only solution I have come up with, since they won't do
what I tell them, is to just turn off junk checking.

I just checked my Gmail. There's a message in there dated 15/03/2023. I
don't know what you did to set it up to delete messages over 90 days
    old.

Yes, I'm going to do a bit of looking around now. Tks.

It does delete the trash and spam.

"Messages that have been in Spam more than 30 days will be automatically deleted."

"Messages that have been in Trash more than 30 days will be automatically deleted."

Trash is what you've deleted from the inbox, spam never got there. I think
the inbox is forever or 15GB, whichever comes first. I probably don't have
to worry about it but if I'm checking the spam trap I'll do some
    housekeeping.
