They don't give a f**k about it and neither does the audience.
Neither should they.
Gender and identity politics is all about sexually grooming
children to become pray for perverted adults. It's totally
disgusting. No one who is not sick in the head would ever
contemplate allowing it to feature in a show directed at
children.
Regardless of what it is or isn't "Doctor Who" is not the place
for gender politics, gay/hetro/bi relationships and all that
other modern mumbo jumbo that deals with life in the real
world... "Doctor Who" was supposed to be a sci-fi drama series,
principally aimed at a younger audience, but one which families
could watch too. (Leela wasn't showing-off cleavage for the
under sixes, was she?!) In other words, escapism. "Doctor Who"
wasn't meant to be a documentary series.
That's where the show has lost its way... it has evolved into a
vehicle for social commentary first and foremost, with
adventures in time and space almost an after-thought.

Dr. Who is obviously in serious need of a retro reboot, heavy on the
Science Fiction and characters, leave the politics to some other TV
show.
My opinion.

NO! Doctor Who has never been "heavy science fiction". It's not meant
to be - it's a kids' show, originally intended as partly-educational,
but more entertaining.

Steven Moffat is now being quoted as saying Doctor Who should be >entertaining and not lecture.

Okay, let's say that Dr. Who needs to get back to its own unique vision
of Science Fiction.

"Doctor Who" was never "heavy" sci-fi, but it was a sci-fi
series... a show about an alien that travels in a time machine
couldn't be anything but! The original "educational" plans went
out the window once the kiddies of the 1960's fell in love with
those deadly alien mutants in their travel machines.
The rest is history.
