    From The True Doctor@agamemnon@hello.to.NO_SPAM to rec.arts.drwho on Mon Dec 8 07:35:37 2025
    From Newsgroup: rec.arts.drwho

I was considering posting two separate reviews but since the first two episodes of TWBLS were shown back-to-back and the writing and directing
is the most horrendous, amateurish, childish, and insulting I have ever
seen, and consists of nothing more than a thin veil for a woke lecture
filled with unsubstantiated lies and propaganda I'm going to review them
    both together.

I'm will review this story written by Pete McTighe and created by Russel
T Davies in comparison to Interstellar by Christopher Nolan since both
    contain an environmentalist message.

While one is well written and the environmentalist message, which easily
falls apart on careful consideration, is simply there to set up a
situation where the human race needs to colonise extra terrestrial
planets in order to survive, ushered on by a seemingly alien but in
actuality Earth originating intelligence, serves the science fiction
which always takes precedence and does not seek to be woke or lecture
the audience, the other is pure degenerate woke lecturing spreading
downright lies, mistruths, and misinformation, using science fiction as
as a means to capture an audience and indoctrinate them with a one sided
false narrative which overwhelms everting, resulting in the most
appalling, infantile, and totally horrendous and insulting writing I
have ever witnessed by a clueless and talentless soap opera hack and
political play-write who is incapable of writing any better then an undedicated infant.

It all tarts off with a humanoid fish lizard being caught up in a
fishing trawler’s nets in the Mediterranean and as soon as the fishermen
see it they shoot it dead. Why are these fishermen carrying guns on a
fishing boat in the middle of the Med? Why have they got them already
pointing at the fish lizard the moment the nets are pulled up? It's as
if they were deliberately hunting the fish lizard to begin with. Why
isn't this explained? Why have the fishermen caught the fish lizard? Is
it by accident or design? The writing is absolute shit from the very
    beginning as is the directing.

The shooting of this fish lizard and then another causes other fish
lizards to retaliate by killing two humans in revenge. Why? We still
don't know if the fish lizards were first hunted down and then killed or
not. The writing is total garbage. More about garbage later.

Then the fish lizards all decide to reveal themselves to mankind because apparently as we learn later two of their hatchlings have been killed by pollution in the oceans. Like this is only supposed to have only ever
happened now and not before? Humanity went by for hundreds of thousands
of years, decades, centuries polluting the seas and oceans and no fish
lizards ever died as a result of it until now? The writing is absolute excrement, just like the plot. Even the fish lizards complain about the excrement in the seas. What about their excrement? Don't fish shit in
the water as they swim? Total hypocrisy.

Oh, did I mention that these fish lizards can also fluidly change gender
as they choose? I think I predicted they would months ago.

So the fish lizards want to communicate with mankind and we are
subjected to 20 minutes of insulting padding showing attempts at
translating their language or squeals, and newscasts documenting their appearances. This is totally unnecessary exposition which tells us
nothing about the non-existent plot or motivations of the fish lizards
    or humans.

An imbecilic, socially inept effeminate moron played played by the gay
actor Russell Tovey is chosen by accident to be the ambassador for mankind.

The degenerate hypocrite Russell T Davies told everyone that only gay
actors were suitable for playing the roles of gay characters, so why has
an unconvincing gay actor playing what would appear to be a heterosexual character been inflicted on the audience?

After he is activated by UNIT, Tovey is shown being woken up by what
appears to be an obese mixed race male character who at first I believed
to be his male lover. Then he drives off with this character who is
about the same height as him to this black woman's house, and I start to question if this character is actually male when she starts embracing
the other black woman. What the fuck is going on? Are they lesbians?
    Bisexual? A manage a trois?

Oh, so she's supposed to be his daughter? Why the fuck doesn't she even
look like him? I thought he was gay. He acts and behaves like he's gay. Haven't the producers and director got a clue how to cast people in appropriate roles so they look convincing?

Now we come to Interstellar. Interstellar was about the main
protagonist's relationship with his daughter. Everything was written
around that relationship and from the characterisation of the daughter
and the main protagonist’s son and their grandfather and their
relationships with each other you could predict everything that followed
in the plot, every motivation for why they did what they did and why
they did it and even what they ending would be, in the first 5 minutes.
Those relationships were embedded into the plot in order to serve and
evolve the plot and were all necessary. In contrast there is no plot development, characterisation or character development at all concerning Tovey's daughter or apparently ex-wife. They serve no purpose whatsoever
in evolving the story, because there is no story. They're degenerate
soap opera filler created to waste time by a clueless infantile writer
who doesn't understand the basics of writing or story telling. Why have
them there at all, unless it's the woke political messaging to show a
mixed race relationship? They serve no purpose at all.

The degenerate clueless writer assumes everyone already knows who the
Sea Devils are and who the Doctor is, which is another example of his ineptitude and bad writing. The Doctor is totally irrelevant to this
story so why waste time talking about him instead of developing the
characters in this specific story in a meaningful manner as in
    Interstellar?

Why would the audience know the whole backstory of the Sea Devils? Show
not tell. The writer and director don't have a clue. Nothing is shown
from the Sea Devils stand point. Why are they accepted by the humans as
being superior when they have not demonstrated that on screen? Why
aren't the being nuked as soon as they appear?

In one scene we are shown two humans sucked into the sand by the Sea
Devils. In the next scene a military General with an American accent
tries looking for them and calling them on the radio wondering where
they are for minutes on end. The audience already knows they've been
killed by the fish lizards, so there is no mystery or tension in this
scene at all. No one gives a clue about the General or the 'red shirts' because none of them were given any character or character development.
It's a complete waste of time. The director and writer don't have a clue.

To these woke imbeciles the writing doesn't matter. It comes a poor
second place to the political messaging.

The imbecilic morons don't even understand basic biology. Homo is a
genus for humans so why have they named the fish lizards Homer Aqua?
They're bloody reptiles so can't be part of the genus Homo, but all the imbeciles can do is have Tovey tell his hideously obese daughter that
that Homo doesn't mean Gay. How about telling her what a Genus is and
why it is being applied to the fish lizards incorrectly, and educate people?

Why has Tovey even been mistaken for the real guy UNIT sent for as
Ambassador? All government employees should be wearing identity tags
which denote their position and rank, so they should have known from the
start Tovey was not their man. Why didn't they check his ID for fuck's
sake? They ejected the guy that Tovey took the place of when he tried to
enter the government building the fish lizards had chosen for their conference, so why didn't security ask for Tovey's ID ever? Fucking
    morons for writers!

And then all the woke lecturing begins from the mouthpiece of the fish lizards. Lie, after lie, after lie, after lie, after lie putting down
humans and humanity and accusing them of polluting the rives, the seas,
and the oceans, without any opposing argument whatsoever.

You learn about the Water Cycle in basic O-Level Geography. You learn
about various vicious circles, and about how humans need to battle and
break them to survive. All of this is thrown out of the window by the degenerate imbecilic woke writers and their hatred of their own species.
It's an insult to every viewer's intelligence. Don't the fish lizards understand that sewerage is processed before it is dumped into the sea
and the Water Cycle? They all come across as a bunch or self centred,
self serving, ignorant, hate filled bigots, just like the writers
themselves. Logic and reason and the survival of humanity is ridiculed
by the creation of a bunch of straw horses including a parody of Nigel
    Farage.

The fish lizards present the humans with one impossible ultimatum after another and start making impossible demands (like Vladimir Putin
refusing to make peace with Ukraine unless Ukraine gives up all of it's territory to Russia) and then they shower all the land on Earth with
plastic bottles and other garbage plucked out of all the oceans, seas,
rives, and waterways. This is totally laughable childish writing.

Do the infantile writers, McTighe and Davie think that this will
engender support for their cause? A complete pack of lies,
disinformation and unsubstantiated extremist propaganda that can easily
be fact checked and proven to be false. Plastic bottles are either
recycled and put into landfill, not thrown into the sea. The
overwhelming 99.9999% of anything that does end up in the sea is bio-degradable and totally harmless.

And then the fish lizards decide to drop the wreck of the Titanic into
    the middle of New York.

What a complete pile of excrement!

Earlier Tovey is asked to drink dirty water from the Thames to show it's undrinkable because it's full of deadly microbes. Those microbes are not
the fault of humans. Legionella evolved naturally in stagnant
air-conditioning units, not from pollution. Cholera is caused by a
bacteria that naturally spreads in stagnant water. One sided crap after
one sided crap that no one is allowed to refute.

Finally at the end of the second episode Tovey is forced to agree to
meet the fish lizards at the bottom of a 5 mile deep ocean trench in the middle of the Atlantic, which is basically impossible.

Absolute complete and utter garbage is all this story is about and all
    this story is.

    0/10 for both episodes.

I like Russell Tovey in this actually.

The degenerate clueless writer assumes everyone already knows
who the Sea Devils are and who the Doctor is, which is another
example of his ineptitude and bad writing. The Doctor is
totally irrelevant to this story so why waste time talking
about him instead of developing the characters in this
specific story in a meaningful manner as in Interstellar?

By mentioning the Doctor I keep coming back to the issue that
if all those Sea Devils rose up in cities all around the world,
as depicted... would the Doctor really just ignore them and not
get involved? Ncuti's Doctor might have gone [somewhere], but
there's still a Doctor relaxing in London. So for me, the Doctor
should have just been ignored completely, as by mentioning him
it's just drawing attention to the fact he's not bothered to get
involved in such a major conflict alongside UNIT.

Why would the audience know the whole backstory of the Sea
Devils? Show not tell. The writer and director don't have a
clue. Nothing is shown from the Sea Devils stand point. Why
are they accepted by the humans as being superior when they
have not demonstrated that on screen? Why aren't the being
nuked as soon as they appear?

In reality, that's exactly what would happen.

If Donald Trump couldn't do a deal with them for mining rights
    under the sea, BOOM!!!

To these woke imbeciles the writing doesn't matter. It comes
a poor second place to the political messaging.

There was ALWAYS going to be a political message.

    It's a BBC drama in 2025 - you wouldn't expect anything else!

And then all the woke lecturing begins from the mouthpiece of
the fish lizards. Lie, after lie, after lie, after lie, after
lie putting down humans and humanity and accusing them of
polluting the rives, the seas, and the oceans, without any
    opposing argument whatsoever.

Never trust a fish lizard with no breasts!

Do the infantile writers, McTighe and Davie think that this
will engender support for their cause? A complete pack of
lies, disinformation and unsubstantiated extremist propaganda
that can easily be fact checked and proven to be false.
Plastic bottles are either recycled and put into landfill, not
thrown into the sea. The overwhelming 99.9999% of anything
that does end up in the sea is bio-degradable and totally
    harmless.

We all knew the message of this series was going to be
environmental damage caused by us, the people of Earth. (Which
is why I thought this series would have been broadcast around
Earth Day in 2026.) It was the raison d'être behind the whole
    series.

And then the fish lizards decide to drop the wreck of the
Titanic into the middle of New York.

    Not NYC!!! I've family there.

Finally at the end of the second episode Tovey is forced
to agree to meet the fish lizards at the bottom of a 5 mile
deep ocean trench in the middle of the Atlantic, which is
    basically impossible.

In fairness, Pertwee's Doctor went down under the sea to meet
the Sea Devils in their caves in 1972.

Absolute complete and utter garbage is all this story is about
    and all this story is.

    0/10 for both episodes.

IF - and I mean IF - I was rating the first two episodes I would
have gone for something like 6/10 for Ep 1 and 5/10 for Ep 2,
but I would rather judge the whole series once I have seen all
    five episodes.

The True loon wasn’t looking to closely:

After he is activated by UNIT, Tovey is shown being woken up by what
appears to be an obese mixed race male character who at first I believed
to be his male lover. Then he drives off with this character

    You obviously weren’t paying attention.

Tovey’s character wasn’t woken up by any character but by
the loud buzzing of his top secret UNIT communicator that
he keeps hidden in his sock drawer. The he goes and wakes his kid.
Got that? Tovey is the one who wakes up the kid, not the other
    way round!

And they’re obviously not lovers because they sleep in separate rooms!

Now there is a real plot hole that you missed. Tovey’s character is
an expert in booking taxis, but he doesn’t even think to call an

UNIT car to take them all to his ex-wife! (RTD obviously wanted us

RTD is RTD. There's nothing in this series (so far) that we

You have to keep your readers engaged, not put them to sleep!

    Your trun BS.

    [Snip]

Oh, did I mention that these fish lizards can also fluidly
change gender as they choose? I think I predicted they would
    months ago.

Yes, you did say something along those lines alright...

So the fish lizards want to communicate with mankind and we
are subjected to 20 minutes of insulting padding showing
attempts at translating their language or squeals,

I'm glad they addressed the Sea Devil's speech thing... even
    if unsatisfactorily.

An imbecilic, socially inept effeminate moron played played
by the gay actor Russell Tovey is chosen by accident to be
    the ambassador for mankind.

I like Russell Tovey in this actually.

    [Snip]

    BOOM is correct.

To these woke imbeciles the writing doesn't matter. It comes
a poor second place to the political messaging.

There was ALWAYS going to be a political message.

    It's a BBC drama in 2025 - you wouldn't expect anything else!

    Like The Green Death?

    As you like it.

as irrelevant, mind numbing, soap opera padding to fill 5 epsiodes

By mentioning the Doctor I keep coming back to the issue that
if all those Sea Devils rose up in cities all around the world,

I wouldn't have said obese though... just fat.

Can't say I cared much about either of them to be honest. It was

And now, after a multi-failure authentication incident yesterday, we get

AI/LLM assessment of the audience impressions
of the War between the land and the sea ?

    Google GEmini

The War Between the Land and the Sea: Audience and Critical Impressions

The miniseries, a Doctor Who spin-off focusing on the alien Sea Devils (renamed Homo Aqua/Amphibia) and the UNIT task force, has received
a mixed-to-positive reception from critics and generally favourable
    reactions from viewers.

    Critical Reception (Mixed)

Critics generally praised the structure and performances but were divided
on the execution and subtlety of the central theme.

    Publication

    Rating/Verdict

    Key Observations

    Radio Times

    4/5 Stars

Praised the sharp writing compared to recent Doctor Who and the strong character development of the protagonist, Barclay (Russell Tovey).
    Found it emotive and funny.

    The Guardian

    3/5 Stars

Found the show entertaining but criticized the "zero subtlety"
in its messaging and felt it was a "wasted opportunity" to make
genuinely great television, also noting a "dubious approach to female roles."

    The Independent

    2/5 Stars

Described the series as "bland without the Time Lord,"
suggesting the spin-off does not stand strongly enough on its own.

    The i Paper

    Positive

Called it "the most grounded, mature storytelling that Doctor Who
has seen in years," appreciating its divergence from standard Who finales.

    Audience/Viewer Impressions (Generally Positive)

Social media and viewer commentary, particularly in the UK where the show premiered, indicate a strong initial engagement:

Hooked and Gripped: Many viewers reported being "hooked" and described
the drama as "gripping" after the two-episode premiere.

Comparison to Torchwood: A significant number of fans compared the tone
and themes favorably to the earlier, darker Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood, especially the acclaimed miniseries Children of Earth. There is a clear appetite for the more serious, grounded nature of this story.

Performance: Russell Tovey's performance as the "everyman" ambassador
Barclay was widely praised and is cited as a major strength that grounds
    the fantastical conflict.

Theme and Message: The show's intense focus on the climate crisis
and humanity's mistreatment of the oceans was highly noticeable.
While some viewers appreciated the urgent, "on the nose" ecological commentary, others found it heavy-handed or "didactic."

Ratings Success: Initial overnight figures suggested the show was
one of the biggest new drama launches of the year for the BBC,
    indicating strong viewer turnout.

(The other day , GooGem was catatonic for a response
    )

    ChatGPT

Here’s a summary of **audience impressions** (and early public reception)
of The War Between the Land and the Sea — based on what appears on its
IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes pages, plus viewer-reaction articles
    and fan-forum commentary.

    ## What many viewers like

    * On IMDb the show has a user rating of ~ **7.3/10**. ([IMDb][1])
    * Some viewers say it "started off way better than expected" - praising
its characters, "heart," and initial episodes. ([IMDb][2])
    * A number of fans appreciate the acting and tone: for example,
one review calls the first two episodes "good story and good special FX"
and says the show has "its own vibe." ([IMDb][2])
    * Some on social media and viewer-reaction articles report being "hooked," calling the series “gripping,” even among people who aren't hardcore sci-fi fans. ([HELLO!][3])
    * Several enjoy the more mature, serious spin on the Doctor Who
universe - seeing it as a "bold, atmospheric spin-off" with moral stakes, rather than a lighter or purely adventurous tone. ([IMDb][1])

So — for a section of the audience: good performances, decent visuals,
a mature tone, and a premise that feels fresh compared with recent
    Whoniverse output.

    ## What critics and some viewers dislike (or find lacking)

    * On Rotten Tomatoes the "Audience" (Popcorn) score is weak - the page
shows **Fewer than 50 ratings**, and the visible “Audience Reviews” include complaints. ([Rotten Tomatoes][4])
    * Several IMDb users report disappointment: complaints include "lack
of subtlety," heavy-handed messaging, uneven tone, and a storyline
that "gets lost" despite some nice visuals. ([IMDb][2])
    * Some found the pacing slow or the drama unconvincing:
for instance one user wrote the show "felt like a bad Doctor Who episode", criticised the dialogue
and said they "turned off after 15 minutes." ([IMDb][2])
    * Others criticised the "politically charged scenes with a box-ticking agenda," suggesting the show is too overt or preachy with its themes
rather than letting the story speak for itself. ([Rotten Tomatoes][4])
    * A few viewers seem especially dissatisfied - labeling the direction,
acting or writing as "atrocious," "horrible," or "bad" in reviews. ([IMDb][2])

In short: for some the ambition and subject matter don't pay off - it's viewed as uneven, heavy-handed, or even boring.

    ## General Tone of Reception So Far — Mixed & Polarising

By combining the positive and negative feedback:

    * The response is **quite mixed**, with **polarised opinions**: some fans feel it's a refreshing new direction for the Whoniverse and enjoy the drama; others feel let down, especially if they were expecting something subtler or more
    in line with classic sci-fi.

    * There seems to be a **split along expectations**: people who come with
low expectations (or are more open to the environmental / political tone)
tend to enjoy it; those hoping for a "classic" or more neutral sci-fi/alien-invasion show often find it disappointing or unbalanced.
    * Early enthusiasm exists among parts of the audience - but many
are skeptical, reserved, or actively critical, especially
after the first couple of episodes.

    ## ‍What Fans on Forums Are Saying

On a fan forum thread discussing the show:

"I went in with no expectations and I enjoyed both episodes." ([Reddit][5]) “It was actually refreshing for the humans to be dealing with the issue,
rather than relying on the Doctor…" ([Reddit][5])

    But some are more cautious:

"It's fairly ham-fisted politically… some of the lines felt like classic
RTD-isms… not in the best way." ([Reddit][5])

So among dedicated fans there's a guarded optimism mixed with criticism about tone, political messaging, and execution.

    ---

    ## 🧩 My Take: Why the Mixed Reception?

I think the mixed audience impressions stem from these factors:

    * The show tries to blend **sci-fi, political allegory, environmental messaging, and the Whoniverse legacy** - that's ambitious, but it risks alienating viewers who prefer escapist sci-fi.
    * It seems to **choose a heavier tone** (less whimsical/fantastical,
more moral/political) — that works for some, but comes off as preachy
    or clunky for others.
    * As with many spin-offs or reboots, **expectations differ widely**:
some value the new direction; others want something more traditional.
    * Finally, because the show is new and not all episodes out yet,
early reactions may still evolve - first impressions matter a lot,
but things could improve (or worsen) depending on where the narrative goes.

    ---

If you like - I can pull up **a breakdown of how different fan-communities (casual viewers, longtime Doctor Who fans, critics)** are reacting to
the show so far - that tends to show some interesting divides in perception.

Nope. Calling him/her fat is an insult to fat people. This person was

RTD has wrote a ton of stuff that's led nowhere and has been
a waste of the viewer's time because the plots were not
    developed.

Because it was never about the plot or the characters. It was only about inserting the far left political agenda and attacking the audience into submission. Everything else was window dressing which was quickly thrown together and never thought out properly.
    So yeah, you're right.

Still, it's a pretty safe bet that Barclay's kid is going to
find himself/herself in jeopardy at some stage during the
proceedings, as there's three more episodes to go. RTD does
likes his OTT soap opera emotional drama.

It's not emotional when you don't give a fuck about any of the
characters because they either look repulsive, are played by effeminate
gay actors who can't play heterosexual characters and make them look

Yes it was. It's absolute crap showing that British writers don't have

I'm aware that neither Davies or McTighe can write them.

Neither can’t you writer simple sentences.

The spell checker changed the words I intended to write.

Ah, we've all heard *that* broken record before...and it was bullshit
then, and it is still bullshit now.

Yes, ruining everybody's Christmas so they can spread
their sickening woke likes and propaganda.

The 21st isn't Christmas. And you'll ruin your own Christmas
by getting worked up over a nothing TV series that's only meant
as a bit of light entertainment on a Sunday evening. It's not a
    documentary!

    It wasn't THAT bad!!!

Yes it was. It's absolute crap showing that British writers
don't have the remotest clue how to write drama. This is the
produce of low level clueless and talentless soap opera hacks
that don't give give a shit about the story or play and only
    care about political messaging.

The first episode was better than the second, writing wise...
but I didn't think either episode was at the crap level. They
were par for the course for a typical BBC drama in 2025 with a
jumbled-up message and the right boxes being ticked.
