FWIW, I disagree with the "garbage" take. I liked the script.

I take it that the complaint was really about it being "woke" and that
is the basis for his complaint.

    It really wasn't, though.

There's one line about "you're weaponizing my feminism against me" which
has some people moaning, but that line is a joke. I think some people
have forgotten how much of a Buffy script is quipping.

I chose to read it as a Buffy script, imagining the same playful
delivery from the old show, and I enjoyed it. *shrug*

But what Whedon and the other writers realized early on is that they were a bunch of (relatively) old people and if they tried to mimic the teen jargon of the time, it would have come off cringe and worse, it would have dated and
aged the show within years, so what they did is made up their own teen-speak. Since it never actually existed, it never got old and it didn't feel like that meme of Steve Buscemi saying, "How do you do, my fellow kids".

This script did the opposite and just like Whedon predicted from the
beginning, it didn't feel like kids talking. It felt like adults
embarrassingly trying to fit in and be cool with their teenage kids.

delivery from the old show, and I enjoyed it. *shrug*

Not exactly. IMO, they used the old teenspeak. At the end, when the long-buried vampires emerge into the modern day, they pronounce the
future to be "...so lame." If they were intended to sound like modern
young people, they would have said "...so cringe."

The vampires had been underground since the 90s, so that's what their
    culture still was.
