Divisive Paramount+ TV Show Canceled Ahead of Season 2
------------------------------------------------------
The fate of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been decided at
Paramount+ - and it's not looking good for the beloved
franchise.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 just wrapped production.
The 12th Star Trek series, which premiered its first season
earlier this year, was picked up at Paramount+ back in 2023.
The streamer announced the show's Season 2 renewal even before
Season 1 had aired.
What did Paramount+ say about the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
cancellation?
With Season 1 having aired its season finale on March 12,
Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy won't
be returning for Season 3, ending its run with its upcoming
second season.
The first season debuted with a favorable critical reception,
garnering an 87% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. However,
audiences were less generous, giving Season 1 a score of 51%.
It wasn't a streaming darling either, as it struggled to rank
on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming viewership charts.
The show received a divisive reaction from audiences, with some
criticizing its coming-of-age storyline. While the streaming
platform did not specify the reason for its decision, low
viewership and audience response may have contributed to its
sudden cancellation.
CBS Studios and Paramount+ released a joint statement. It reads:
"We're incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity
that went into bringing 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' to life.
The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of
characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the 'Star
Trek' universe in exciting new ways ... We look forward to
sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and
continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was
accomplished with this series."
Taking place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek:
Starfleet Academy - set in the 32nd century - follows the new
class of Starfleet cadets as they train to be the new officers.
It stars Holly Hunter as Nahla Ake, Sandro Rosta as Caleb Mir,
Karim Diane as Jay-Den Kraag, and more.
Co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga
Landau also released a statement, promising a strong end to the
Star Trek show. "We are in post-production now on what will be
the second and final season. We're so proud of what we've
accomplished together on this show, and the world will get to see
the work of these extraordinary artists when season two airs. We
will finish strong."
