    What did you watch?

I watched "The Deadly Assassin," an episode of Doctor Who starring Tom
Baker as the Fourth Doctor, for a rec.arts.drwho watch party. Those of
you who like Doctor Who should come join us. It's a lot of fun!

I also watched some reruns. I have some thoughts about American Dad, but
I'd like to write them up properly.

This is a key episode in establishing the story of Gallifrey and a bit
of the backstory of Rassilon, and it's the best of these stories. Part
of the problem was that we really wanted a number of these characters
used from story to story to story, played by the same actor. They
substituted characters or recast them. Some of the substitutions sort of
worked but the recastings never did. Then, of course, The Five Doctors, intended to be the blowout Gallifreyan story, is largely a remake of
    this episode, done worse.

What you said in another followup about Doctor Who scripts having always
made comments on society, this episode takes very sharp digs at
contemporary British society and absurd pomp and circumstance in a way
that actually entertains without hectoring the audience in any way and
without condescension. This cannot be explained to Russell T. Davies.

IMO, none of the Multidoctor stories are that great as stories. They're novelties, and I often enjoy them on that basis.

I don't agree. I liked both The Three Doctors and The Two Doctors. Both
were well written and worked both for plot development and nostalgia of revising characters we hadn't seen in years. The only one that
disappointed me from Classic Who was The Two Doctors.

In modern Who, well, those episodes don't mean as much to me and I
cannot comment on crossover stuff except for disliking the annoying
    "timey whimey" dialogue.

I watched a Jason Statham action movie called SHELTER on the Apples. It was pretty by the numbers. Statham is a ex-MI6 super-assassin who grew a conscience, disobeyed orders to kill an innocent, and then dropped off the grid, living a solitary life on an island in the Outer Hebrides Islands. When his supply boat sinks in a storm off the coast of his island, he saves the 13-year-old girl aboard from going down with her father. He nurses her back to health and in doing so comes to the attention of his old handler Bill Nighy, who immediately sets about trying to kill them both. From there, it's your standard John Wick scenario with Statham dispatching Nighy's assassin teams by the dozen.

I watched that a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it enough to not worry about
the story and why they wanted to kill Statham's character.
