Bizarre Book Series Being Turned into Disney+ TV Show with Ryan Coogler
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
An Animorphs TV show that is being made for Disney+ is in the works.
Animorphs is a popular series of sci-fi young adult books written by
Katherine Applegate and her husband, Michael Grant. Published between
June 1996 and May 2001 by Scholastic, the series includes 54 novels in
total, as well as ten companion books. They revolve around a series of
characters who obtain the ability to transform into any animal that
they touch.
Animorphs are perhaps best remembered for their covers, as they depict
children morphing into different kinds of animals in bizarre fashion.
What do we know about the Animorphs Disney+ TV show?
Per Variety, development has begun on an Animorphs TV show for Disney+.
Bayan Wolcott is attached to write and executive produce the show,
while Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian all serve as
executive producers for Proximity Media.
Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman are also executive producers for
Scholastic. The show comes from 20th Television, with Simone Harris
and Dezi Gallegos overseeing the project.
The show, per the official logline, "follows a group of teenagers who
uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while
juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of High School."
Deadline's article further explains that the book series "followed a
group of teenagers - Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias - who
discover that the Earth is being secretly taken over by a parasitic
alien race known as Yeerks. The group meets a dying alien of the
Andalite race, which has been fighting the Yeerks and their expansion
across the galaxy. The Andalite gives them the ability to morph into
any animal they touch by absorbing the animal's DNA. They use this
power to launch a secret resistance against the Yeerks and to save the
world. They are later joined by Ax, a young Andalite stranded on Earth."
There already was a live-action Animorphs series that originally aired
on Nickelodeon in 1998. It ran for two seasons.
