Homeowner, a trauma surgeon, and his wife are awoken in the middle of
the night by a trespasser looking in windows, including the bedrooms of
their children, trying windows and doors looking for a way in. Man takes
wife's gun to seee if the potential ho,e invader is still trying to
break in. Wife calls 911 but dispatch fails to tell her that police are
already on scene as other neighbors had already complained.

Man is frighted when he sees vehicles blocking his dead end street with
strong lights shining, thinks it's part of the break in, and fires a
warning shot. He is then ordered to show hands or they will shoot. He
turns and flees, gets shot at 10 times, onne shot hitting him in the
    back of the leg.

Taken to the hospital he learns that he was shot by the cops.

The cops never identified themselves and there were no Mars lights
turned on. While he was fleeing, he tripped and accidentally fired three
    shots into the ground.

He was charged on three separatte occassions. The firstt two grand jury indictments were thrown out as the prosecutor hid facts from the jury.
Finally, the third indictment sticks but the judge is troubled.

The home invader turned out to be a gang banger but he never got
arrested for all the trespass and looking for unlocked doors and windows
on any of the houses. He's the, er, victim.

Police wrote up reports to make it appear that the man had threatened
    them.

Consecutive sentences, if convicted, would run 20 years.

Not the UK this time but Maricopa County Arizona.
