• [OT] Nigel Farage resigns!

Nigel Farage has resigned his seat in Parliament. Although his Reform
Party only had a handful of seats, it had led in over 300 consecutive
polls when voters were asked about voting intentions for the next
election. In other words, he had a really good shot at becoming the
Prime Minister if things kept on the same path.

This is a very big event in British politics. Farage led the Brexit
campaign a decade ago and he founded the Reform Party and is its most prominent spokesman. He persuaded a variety of high profile Tories to
leave the Conservative Party. This is likely to be a huge blow to the
many people hoping to finally close the borders and deport recent
arrivals (and others who are not assimilating).

It turns out that some uncomfortable questions about Farage and how he acquired certain donations had arisen. A Parliamentary inquiry was investigating to see if he should be stripped of his seat and some of
the legacy media went into a bit of a feeding frenzy and starting
hounding him, his property and even his daughter.

Farage has made a rather bold play of resigning his seat before they
could take it from him and then running in a by-election so that he can
prove his constituents support him and won't be fooled by a media
"stitch-up" (what we call a "frame job" on this side of the pond). The
risk of course is that the other parties could work together to keep him
from winning his seat back and even if they fail, the parliamentary
committee could still take it away from him after the by-election.

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

Except it was all a publicity stunt with nothing changing. Apparently
he resigned to end the discussion into his corruption but he is still
running for the MP in his district and seems certain to win it so
he'll shortly be back in office.

They said the 'discussion' would be suspended during the election, but
if he wins, it would start up again. So I'm not sure what he gains,
though a lot of the voters aren't too happy with him.

It seems the major parties are all refusing to run candidates against
him and only a poser called "Count Binface" who is an active who wears
a garbage can over his head.

He has some great one liners but definitely not what I'd call a
serious candidate though Farrage's detractors are all voting for him
so the polls are about 60-35 for Farrage which is less than a leading
national leader should expect vs a comedian

Apparently "Count Binface" claims to be an alien from Sigma 9, so would
be an *actual* alien if elected. But being an doesn't seem to be a
problem; a Green Party candidate who is from India and who only has a
student visa was elected in the Scottish elections in May. The
authorities apparently decided that him serving in the Scottish
parliament didn't actually count as "work" otherwise he'd be violating
    the terms of his visa.

British elections really *are* becoming a bit of a farce....

Since aliens are generally humanoid thanks to the limitations of
Hollywood central casting, why would we assume the 9th planet in a solar
    system could sustain our life?
