It’s hard to believe Shout TV is 35 years old already.

    What did you watch?

    Hey, thanks for asking!

The fire stick offers a row of free TV. That seems to be streaming stuff
you can’t pause from various sources. One of the shows is THE F.B.I. (The 1960s and 70s original Quinn Martin production). I’ve had it running as background noise but they’ve started doing this horrible thing where they don’t show act four and/or the epilogue, so you get Ephrem Zimbalist Junior closing in on the bad guys, it goes to commercial and then the next episode starts. Sometimes they don’t run the prologue and/or episode one.

Yesterday I watched the 24 hour STAR TREK the motion picture marathon.

Right before that, I watched the pilot movie for the Ellery Queen TV
series. It was stupid beyond belief. They’ve got this bit where he turns to the audience and tries to get them to guess the killer before he does the reveal. There was no possible way to guess the killer. Worse still there
was no possible way the crime could’ve taken place at all. The victim,
shot and dying, laboriously drags herself across the room to unplug the TV during the three seconds the weather report is showing a crude drawing of
the sun, figuring that somebody will figure out she’s saying that the son
of a guy she used to date killed her. Because she apparently somehow knew
the weather report in advance. Plus, they explained that TV timing is so precise that they can use the original scripts for the show and reenact it
and figure out what happened at the exact second she unplugged the TV. That
was enough for me and I decided not to bother with the series at all.

    MAKING IT
A 1971 movie about a kid in high school that had Pamela Hensley in a non-speaking role. Notably, his mother is played by Joyce Van Patton and
her boyfriend is played by her real life, brother Dick Van Patton and they
    have smoochies! Ewww!

If you have AppleTV+ you might want to check out "The Studio." It is a
satire series set in Hollywood. It follows a studio exec played by Seth
Rogen and his wacky adventures to get movies made. Although I got a
little bored with it and I'm not sure if I ever finished all the
    episodes or not.

    On Sunday I watched:

Avatar (3D blu-ray) 2009 movie written and directed by James Cameron.
It's about a young man who must save FernGully, the last rain forest
from an evil corporation. Wait, wrong movie. It's about a young man
who must save the moon Pandora from an evil corporation. It holds up
well enough. There was one moment while watching and I noticed the
score and I thought to myself this is a generic paint by numbers score.
I wondered who wrote it, and sort of jokingly thought to myself, James
Horner. Then later in the movie I noticed the score again, but this
time, the score was straight up the same score from "Aliens." At that
moment, I said to myself, this has definitely got to be a James Horner
score. I checked and sure enough James Horner wrote the score. To be
fair, I do like Horner's score for "Aliens." That's how I recognized it
when he reused it for "Avatar."

Avatar: The Way of Water (4K disc) 2022 sequel which picks up a year
after the first movie with the evil corporation returning to FernGully,
I mean Pandora, to once again chop down the last rain forest, or um,
this time harvest intelligent sea creatures. This may have a been a bit better than the first movie, although it did become background noise
about an hour into this 3 hour long movie.

It - Welcome to Derry (HBO) - "The Black Spot" - Episode 7, and I think
the penultimate episode. A lot went down in this one. SPOILERS!

This episode jumps around between 1908 and the 60s. In 1908 we get a
chunk of the backstory on the human clown (Bill Skarsgård) who would
later become Pennywise. Or more technically get eaten by Pennywise then
have his persona used to lure in children.

Last week and this week we also get a lot more details about Pennywise's
human daughter played by Madeleine Stowe. There have been a lot of
comments online about the daughter character since she also appeared in
the movie. The main focus has been on the character's age. Several
people online were arguing the ages don't line up because the daughter character in the 60s episode would have had to be about 67 years old
(the actress doesn't look anywhere near 67) then someone pointed out the actress playing the character is in fact 67 years old. I really have to emphasize, Madeleine Stowe does *not* look anywhere near 67 years old!

Anyway, with a little help from his daughter there is a massacre and
Pennwise gets his belly full and is ready to slumber for a few decades.
This is when the episode drops a second major reveal. The military has
no intention of trapping or relocating Pennywise away from the U.S. The military wasn't trying to figure out how to capture Pennywise, in fact
he was already trapped in Derry. The military is trying to free him as
a means of controlling the U.S. population as a whole.

I just got done sitting through my yearly trip to the DMV (because I can't renew online because the system doesn't recognize my insurance company, which makes an in-person trip mandatory), so I was in no mood for jokes about DMV employees making life harder on the public than necessary.

I had to visit the DMV in flyover country in regards to my 98 y/o aunt's
car (no, she doesn't drive). I hope no one here ever has to deal with
    similar issues...

Anyway, just want to mostly compliment the DMV office here for
    doing things just about right.

The worker at the intake podium had a translation program on
her personal phone [a] and I watched as someone spoke into it
(let's not get into the whole "dammit, they should all speak
English deal, ok?) using some other language (not Spanish),
and the phone did a textual translation to English. And
    then vice versa.

Fascinating to watch as all this stuff we've been dreaming about
for a century is actually mass market and working.

[a] the people at the desks had official phones with this or
similar functions, and those would also vocalize the second
language. She exlained how the initial orders were only
done "per desk" and no one had thought of her and the similar
folk. New orders were in the process.

Annual? My state has had mandatory insurance for decades. The
requirement is satisfied by carrying a current ID card from the
insurance company. They do investigate a handful of randomly-selected
vehicle owners each year but no vehicle owner deals with this in person.
The enforcement group handles everything by mail. They aren't even at facilities the public goes to.

makes an in-person trip mandatory), so I was in no mood for jokes about DMV >> employees making life harder on the public than necessary.

I'm here to provide those jokes.

Your state is leading my state in the race to the bottom.

Yes, you have to show proof of insurance every year to get your registration renewed, and every other year, you have to show documentation showing your car passed a smog check.

Most people do all of this online. The smog check facility zaps the results directly to the DMV headquarters in Big Sac. But when you renew online and it gets to the insurance part, it throws up a screen with dozens of insurance companies listed and you're supposed to choose your company, at which point
the DMV computers query the company's computers to verify your policy. Except not every insurance company is listed on the splash screen and at the bottom
it tells you that if your company isn't listed, it's because they don't
provide the CA DMV access to their database, so you have to either mail a physical copy of your proof of insurance to Big Sac or go to a DMV in person and have them process your registration.

My company (USAA) doesn't cooperate with the CA DMV, so I have to go in person every year to show them my insurance card in order to renew my registration. (The mail thing takes months to process and the two times I tried it, I ended up driving around with expired tags for a couple weeks before the new sticker arrived in the mail, so now I just go to the DMV and get it taken care of in
    an afternoon.)

A couple of years ago I asked some friends who
said yes, that thumbprint deal was still in place.

Is the DMV continuing to get away with this garbage?

    Thanks

The thumbprint isn't on the license itself but you do have to provide one to get the license in the first place.

Yes, you have to show proof of insurance every year to get your registration renewed, and every other year, you have to show documentation showing your car
    passed a smog check.

Six or seven years ago my state (coincidentally governed by several legislators who happen to own insurance agencies) started this big
scare campaign about how they'd check your license or tag renewal
against a database for insurance. I think it was just a scare tactic
because I see people in the paper charged with violation of the
financial responsibility law all the time (but not necessarily driving
without a license or tag renewal).

My company (USAA) doesn't cooperate with the CA DMV, so I have to go in person

In my state you have to show up in person every 8 years for a new
    drivers license mugshot.
