  • [OT] Are you about to get Canadian citizenship without asking for it?

    From Rhino@no_offline_contact@example.com to rec.arts.tv on Mon Dec 8 10:47:35 2025
    From Newsgroup: rec.arts.tv

I just saw this article in my news feed and, frankly, I'm shocked. It
seems like a lot of foreigners who have Canadian ancestry are suddenly
going to be Canadian citizens, including Madonna, Hilary Clinton, and
Viggo Mortenson, even though none are Canadian now. The Canadian
ancestry doesn't even have to be recent!

It's all explained in this article which seems to be from an immigration newsletter published by a law firm:

    https://www-cicnews-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.cicnews.com/2025/12/these-five-famous-americans-will-become-canadian-citizens-thanks-to-a-new-citizenship-law-1262933.html/amp?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQGsAEggAID#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=17651962987398&csi=0&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cicnews.com%2F2025%2F12%2Fthese-five-famous-americans-will-become-canadian-citizens-thanks-to-a-new-citizenship-law-1262933.html

How many of *you* are about to become Canadians? How do you feel about
    that?

I've always wondered why I get periodic cravings for maple syrup and have strange urges to push rocks across ice with little brooms!

Hopefully when Trump declares war on y'all, I won't be rounded up and put in
an internment camp as suspected Canadidian sympathizer.

I didn't think this new law is going to take away anyone's existing citizenship(s), just add a new one. Would it disqualify Hilary if she
has both American and Canadian citizenship? Maybe it *should* since
there's inevitably the question of dual loyalties but does it actually invalidate a Presidential candidate from running under current law?

I'd love to have him! We could make him Chief Justice of our Supreme
Court. Maybe he could inspire our legislators to stop appointing
activist judges who "legislate from the bench" AND make better laws, especially doing away with bail for practically everyone under every circumstance. People are getting released on bail despite serious
charges, then committing new serious crimes as soon as they're out; each arrest just gets them more bail. This may catch up with them
*eventually* when the cases finally get to court but it means they can
have major crime sprees for extended periods and that's not good.

Trump the Chump wants to do away with everything, then changes his mind
two minutes later, and then again two minutes further on ... partly
because he can't remember what utter crap he spouted 30 seconds before.

He's simply a lunatic with demantia issues and a bad fake hairpiece.

I’ve read that the United States doesn’t acknowledge dual citizenship many many many times over the years. I’ve also read that we do but the claims

I’ve read that the United States doesn’t acknowledge dual citizenship many
many many times over the years. I’ve also read that we do but the claims that we don’t far out number them.

If memory serves, the law on dual citizenships has changed at least once
over the years. A number of draft resisters and deserters came to Canada
(and other countries) during the Vietnam era and I believe most of them eventually got Canadian (or Swedish or whatever) citizenship but had to
give up their American citizenship due to US law first. But I'm pretty
sure the US accepts dual citizenships now so some of the Vietnam era
people who came to Canada have got both US and Canadian citizenship now.

But I suppose Trump could always lead the effort to change it back again
so Americans can only have one citizenship. If he makes that happen, I
hope he gives holders of multiple citizenships the choice of which ones
to keep and which ones to give up but Trump being Trump, I suppose he
could just say that anyone who ever gave up American citizenship can't
    have it back.

I’ve read that the United States doesn’t acknowledge dual citizenship many
many many times over the years. I’ve also read that we do but the claims >> that we don’t far out number them.

If memory serves, the law on dual citizenships has changed at least once over the years. A number of draft resisters and deserters came to Canada (and other countries) during the Vietnam era and I believe most of them eventually got Canadian (or Swedish or whatever) citizenship but had to
give up their American citizenship due to US law first.

Did your grandfather stay in Canada long enough to get citizenship or
landed immigrant status (which is what "permmanent resident status" used
to be called, if memory serves)? If not, I doubt you'll win Canadian citizenship. Then it'll be off to El Salvador for you.

Of course you could always emigrate to Israel: at least you have a place

That seems a bit harsh. Didn't you have any worries about the Vietnam
War? You would have been old enough to be eligible for the draft. Or did
your health preclude that? Either way, you must have had peers that
objected to the war and some might have fled the country to avoid that.

If any of that is too personal, just pretend I didn't ask. I know that
was a very difficult time for young Americans torn between patriotism,
the law, and the very human desire to survive a war that was very
    unpopular in many circles.

He was there just long enough to make the next portion of the trip to
Chicago. He was age 11. He and his younger brother, age 8, walked across
Europe from the part of Poland grabbed by Russia centuries earlier to
avoid impressed into the Russian army.

I'm very impressed with Ukraine in which men my age are fighting on the
front line against the Russians to regain their country.

But Netanyahu has been a disaster and the few non-Netanyahu governments
    were even worse.

50 years ago, I was in pretty good shape.

Either way, you must have had peers that
objected to the war and some might have fled the country to avoid that.

I was born a week into the first year that didn’t get drafted. Thank you, Richard Millhouse Nixon.

I didn’t know anybody that fled, but I knew a lot that threatened to, and
all of them were cake boys from the theater department, if you get my
meaning, if you catch my drift.

If any of that is too personal, just pretend I didn't ask. I know that

I have no problem with your asking, but I appreciate that.

Nobody, I knew that claimed they were headed for Canada had any strong convictions about that particular police action, they would’ve run from
    being drafted under any circumstances.

I remember Mayor Lindsey of New York City, saying that anybody who fled to Canada should be allowed back in no problem, but anybody who went to jail
for their convictions should just rot there. He was a total douche bag.

Not that you asked my opinion, but I believe the old socialist Charles
Schenck to have been a patriot. This is America. There is a right to
condemn the draft (He merely advised men to know their rights, not flee
to another country) and the law that made it an act of espionage should
have been found unconstitutional on its face.

In the case of the Viet Nam War, there were no American interests at
stake beyond the embarassment of the indefensible foreign policy of
multiple previous presidents, none of which tied the hands of a future president from switching course. Participating in that war or not
shouldn't have been a matter of patriotism but complying with the draft.
