Star Trek Starfleet Academy Season 1 Episode 1 review - As Alex Kurtzman remakes Starfleet Academy to be purely interested in self interest,
subversive manipulation and resource acquisition, episode 2 takes a
while turn. Episode 2 is a very different tone from episode 1, and they
are more than happy to show us how they are stitching up Betazed to be
taken over my pirates and raiders. Starfleet doesn't seem to care about
this and instead manipulates a planets leader via his daughter. While
the leader himself gives some much needed home truths to the Starfleet
Academy captain, he ends up changing his mind. For basically no reason
right at the end he goes back on everything he was rightly concerned
with. I'm surprised at already in episode 2 we have such a huge change
in tone from episode 1. Rather than the previous focus on action and
showing characters in an active situation. Instead this jumped right
into romance territory. It feels like this was just a thin veneer to
cover up the blatant preaching though, and to appeal to their new
demographic that Alex Kurtzman clearly thinks this will attract. Yet
even I have seen this done better. This isn't just bad Trek, but they
tried for something akin to Vampire diaries, and can't even live up to
that. Kurtzman ended up at the worst of every world.
