You know, it's amazing what hoops people will jump through to avoid acknowledging that Shakespeare's works were written by Shakespeare. I
guess that's just too boring. My favorite theory, for its sheer
insanity, is that Queen Elizabeth was the real writer.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, William Shakespeare was a real person whose
life is pretty well documented.

REAL writing really was ... ;-)

life is pretty well documented.

I was in Stratford-on-Avon in 1991 doing a short bus tour of the UK and discovered that the actual school that Shakespeare attended was open to tourists that very week - apparently this was quite rare - so I popped
in. A current student of the "school" - it was really just one room -
told us a bit about the writer. I asked if any of the desks had
Shakespeare's initials carved in them and was disappointed to find that
no such desk had been found. I figure that's pretty solid proof that Shakespeare never really existed.
