Somebody must not be looking at the lyrics in some of those songs if
Born in the USA in on the list. The lyrics of that song do anything but
praise the country. The rousing patriotic sounding refrain make it
sound much different than the depressing lyrics about being beaten down
and not being able to get ahead.

A lot on the list are protest songs. I suppose that's a common theme in the music of America. Almost all of them would be unknown to people younger than 40. It's an eclectic list. That's also a common trait of American music.
Here's a Swedish group singing a quintessential American song.

The odd thing about Born in the US is that it is overwhelmed by the
patriotic refrain while the verses paint a much different picture.

While I agree with many and don't know a few, where the hell is "Battle
Hymn of the Republic"? Did I miss it?
"American Pie" should be higher on the list.

Yes. I availed myself of the ability to filter by time period. The
    1800s gave us:
    Battle Hymn of the Republic
Hard Times Come Again No More
    Stars and Stripes Forever
    Simple Gifts

"American Pie" should be higher on the list.

They should have asked you, then. Perhaps instead of Bobby Flay.
    Or William Shatner.

Lists like this are always subjective. From that list I certainly miss
Arlo Guthrie's 'The City of New Orleans'. A nice ballad about a train.

That is a nice song. Willie Nelson recorded it too. That got me curious
about who wrote it and that turned out to be Steve Goodman. Who knows
what else he might have come up with if he had not died so young. He
died of Leukemia at age 36.

It pays tribute to Buddy Holly, whose 1959 death alongside Ritchie
Valens and The Big Bopper ("the day the music died") inspired the song.

It's a bit simple, but I don't find it weird. Just a little tune.

I like a variety of music, but most in recent years has no appeal to me.
I've been to Neil Diamond and Harry Chapin, but I'd choose Lawrence
    Welk over Taylor Swift.

I like some 40s, a lot of 50s, very little 60s and downhill from there.

Some classical is just marvelous, some is terribly boring. Recently,
heading home Beethoven 9th came on the radio and I extended my ride just
to listen to the full concert on SiriusXM
