It's good to know you've actually had a great life, Chef, but still
sad that it didn't make you happy.  Maybe some day things will
    change for you.  Good luck.

I'm generally quite happy. This morning was rough though. We had to
bury the cat, and the rigor mortis thing was freaky. At least she
died peacefully. This should be our last winter in St. Louis for a
while, and we don't have to restrict camping to one night anymore.

Very sorry for your loss, hang in there.

Just because you and an 8-year-old can make cranberry sauce from
    scratch
doesn't mean it's better than the canned stuff; you just happen to
    like
    whole berry cooked stuff.

I don't mind the chunks of cranberries, but I think I prefer it
jellied.   A can of cranberry is OK for what it is, but you should
try the link that Cindy posted below some time.

    Homemade needn't be whole berry.

My grandmother made this sort of thing (even though canned was
available).  She put it to set in a ring mold.

I usually make the same thing, in some sort of jello mold.

Pre-cooking hamburgers to reheat? Not a chance. I can get fresh
hamburgers at McD's less than a mile from here. *They* have higher
standards than Joan. She isn't an invalid. She's just lazy.

    **********
    AI Overview

McDonald's throws out hamburgers that have been held for more than
10 minutes after cooking to ensure product quality and freshness. This
holding time applies to beef products, while fries have a shorter
holding time of up to 5 minutes.

Holding time: Cooked beef patties are held for a maximum of 10 minutes.
Purpose: This policy is in place to ensure the food is fresh,
tastes good, and is at the correct temperature for customers.
Fries: Fries are held for an even shorter period, up to 5 minutes.
Waste disposal: Any burgers not sold within the 10-minute window
    are discarded.
    **********

One time, when I was living on the street (I was 19) the McD's worker
failed to close the door to the dumpster, and I snatched a bag full of burgers. I never saw them do that again, even though I went there many afternoons hoping. Every other time the employee closed and locked the
gate. I ate a lot of stale donuts during that time as well.

I've got a McD's BOGO any burger coupon that expires in a few days. Two
triple cheeseburgers for $3.79+tax. I've got a McD's gift card
somewhere. It would be funny to spend it down to about $2, then mail it anonymously to Kuthe. Have a note in it that says, "Thank you. Enjoy."
He always ranted against McD's, calling it "Mc Craps." It would cause dissonance. He wouldn't know who sent it, and no way he'd think it was
me. He'd wonder who, what, when, and considering how close he is to the poverty line...

There's almost no chance he'd guess it was a prank.

I'm about 14 years older than you and I don't cook a lot of things I did
10 or 15 years ago. My guess is you won't either in the future. Enjoy

Comparing a real hamburger to the slabs of stuff at McD is a bit of a

You've mentioned you often prepare meals for your in-laws. Do you do

The slabs are 100% USDA inspected ground beef. Sure, they're tiny (1/10
lb), but they're freshly cooked. There's nothing unreal about them. What exactly makes a hamburger real? There is nothing good about a reheated hamburger, no matter how good it started out.>

My f-i-l will be 90 next summer, and m-i-l is 87. She was never
particularly into cooking. She just did it because that's what wives
were expected to do. Folks who post to this NG *are* ostensibly into
cooking. She did start cooking worse. She quit cooking.>
May you live long enough to become lazy!

I'm lazy about plenty of things, but not cooking. If I didn't like to
cook, I would never have started posting here. The only other NG I've
posted much to is alt.punk, and occasional posts to alt.food.fast-food.

There is a lot of fast food that I'd prefer over some of the crap posted
here. Popeyes bone-in spicy chicken is the best fried chicken I've ever
had, and I've had A LOT of fried chicken. Their red beans&rice, Cajun
gravy and biscuits are good too. Del Taco's bean&cheese green burrito
with extra green sauce is great. There's a chain here called Lion's
Choice that makes spectacular roast beef sandwiches. McD's has some good items, like their breakfast sandwiches. The regular burgers and the
Spicy McChickens are pretty good, and the Quarter Pounders are made from
never frozen ground beef. A Steak 'n Shake Double Steakburger is
excellent, they have great chili, and their shoestring fries are fried
in pure beef tallow. Hardee's burgers are good too if you order them
sans sauce, and both Steak 'n Shake and Hardee's have real milkshakes.
Steak 'n Shake has a half price happy hour on shakes from 2-4PM, M-F.
Any of the items mentioned in this paragraph are better than day old, reheated, air fryer hamburgers.

A well made burger has 75 to 80% lean, is formed thicker that McD and
cooked at higher heat for a good external texture and softer internal.
If you cannot tell the difference, you never had a good burger. I'll
take mine properly reheated over the fast food version. Oh, you don't
like air fryers either. Reheats them well.
