It's been a long time since I've been through that area. Flying
past on I-80 in 1987 was probably the last time I was within striking
    distance.

We've got a couple of places, but we mostly don't do "funky"
around here anymore. The funky died sometime in the 1980s when
    everybody became yuppies.

WTF is so great about gimmick restaurants? If they have a good menu,
good food and service they should not have to rely on some cheap gimmick
to attract customers. I don't know how many times you can expect

People like to be entertained and have fun. Most every chain restaurant
has a gimmick of some wort to grab your attention. Wing House, Chili's, Hooters have something to grab attention.

Why to people go to the movies when they can just stay home and read a

Two problems there.... First of all, I don't think you can grab the
things that get your attention at Hooters. Secondly, Hooters is barely
hanging on. It applied for bankruptcy protection earlier this year.

Why to people go to the movies when they can just stay home and read a
    book?

Because they are lazy and want to be entertained with little effort. The
same reason a lot of people go out to eat. FWIW... reading is declining
in the US. 42 of American adults read a book last year, down from 65%
just 5 years ago. Only about 10% of American adults read more than 20
    books a year.

Don't blow a gasket on this. Boomers tend to forego the circus with their bread.

I have one brother who has never read a book. Another one reads
voraciously. He kept me in reading material for years and I was lucky
to having him pre screening my reading material for me. He passed on
    only the books he liked.

I had an odd conversation about reading with a woman at work. She kept recommending books but I ended up telling her that I don't usually enjoy
women authors. She suggested some that she thought I might like. I told
her that I wasn't a really big reader, that I read only at bed time and
read only a book per week. Then it dawned on me that's more 50 books a year.

Playgrounds at McDonald's - that's just so 2000's. The Happy Meals, however, are
still going strong. It's a meal that's made to get your loudmouth brats to STFU for a little while. The adults eat at McDonald's just to keep the kids "happy" but it's not a happy experience for most adults. It's one of the greatest self-sustaining, marketing schemes out there. It's on par with the Wintel hardware/software merry-go-round scam. It's actually a beautiful thing from a marketing standpoint.

Hooters is still around but in fiscal trouble. Chilis used to feature
chili meals, Wing House jumped on the popularity of wings.

Years ago, wings were dirt cheap and KFC has specials to move them.
Then they became popular and price went way up. I blame that guy in
Buffalo. Years ago, out supermarket had a 5 pound bag of wings for 5
cents a pound. Adjusted for inflation, about 43 cents today, not the
$2.75 or so they now sell for.

I can't answer that. I have been to the movies three times in the last
26<?> years. There weren't many others present for each of those
showings. When I moved to St.Catharine in the mid 60s there were four
movie theatres and two drive-ins. Then a three more opened up when they started building malls. Then the downtown theatres closed up. One of the drive-ins closed The other one had relocated and went to a four screen
drive in. That one then closed for a couple years but has now come back
with only one screen. FWIW... it is the one that was famous for being
hit by a tornado while it was showing Twister.

Quite honestly, I was so out of touch with movie theatres I had to
Google to search for local theatres in that city and they are down to
one. There is one four plex in Niagara Falls.

I have to admit that I did enjoy the movie experience in Niagara Falls
but it takes a lot of the fun out of the experience when you see what
they charge for snacks. Thank goodness I am not a movie snacker because
I would by upset having to pay the prices they charge for pop corn,

Hooters is still around but in fiscal trouble.  Chilis used to feature chili meals, Wing House jumped on the popularity of wings.

I live close to Buffalo and have been to the places that started the
Buffalo wing craze. That wing craze started 50 years ago but there are
still a lot of places around that are known primarily for their wings.

We used to have a deep fryer and used to cook wings almost every
Saturday. They had been cheap but after a few years it got to the point
where we could have wings or a steak for about the same price.

I can't answer that. I have been to the movies three times in the last
    26<?> years.
There's a drive-in movie theater in Beaufort. It's the only movie
theater left. Other than that, the regular movie theaters shut down
years ago and people have to drive 50 miles from Beaufort to get to a
    regular movie theater these days.

As for reading books, I read about 4-5 books a week. I love to read! I always have one book at the office I read on my lunch break and another
I'm reading at home, and three or four waiting. I'm fortunate to have a
free lending library (The Cannery) on Dataw where I frequently swap out
books. I also do buy and contribute new books. It's a very nice perk

    Ever read this?
Pretty sure you'd find it more engaging than Conroy. https://books.catapult.co/books/edisto/
Padgett Powell’s first novel (1984) is about coming of age on Edisto, an undeveloped strip of coast between Savannah and Charleston, a “named but never discovered place in the South.”
Simons Manigault (“You say it ‘Simmons.’ I’m a rare one–m Simons”) lives with his mother, an eccentric professor known locally as the
Duchess, who is convinced her twelve–year–old son can become a writer
of genius. She has immersed Simons in the literary classics since birth
and has given him free rein to gather material in such spots as a
nightclub called Marvin’s R.O. Sweet Shop and Baby Grand.

I think Hooter's went out of business.  I don't tend to frequent
chain restaurants.  What would the gimmick be at Chili's or Wing
House?  For a while there were some silly trendy restaurants serving
dinner in the dark.  Literally.  That didn't last.

Do people really go to the movies anymore?

I can't answer that. I have been to the movies three times in the last
    26<?> years.
There's a drive-in movie theater in Beaufort.  It's the only movie
theater left.  Other than that, the regular movie theaters shut down
years ago and people have to drive 50 miles from Beaufort to get to a regular movie theater these days.

As for reading books, I read about 4-5 books a week.  I love to read!  I always have one book at the office I read on my lunch break and another
I'm reading at home, and three or four waiting.  I'm fortunate to have a free lending library (The Cannery) on Dataw where I frequently swap out books. I also do buy and contribute new books.  It's a very nice perk
for someone who loves to read.

I thought I had it pretty good in the days when my brother was passing
on the good books he had been reading. I made the mistake of telling
him he could save a lot of money but getting a library card so he could
borrow books for free. Then one day he took my advise and I ended up
    losing my pre-reader.

I had a problem for a few years. I used to get the occasional loser and
was stuck with my belief that I had to finish any book I started. Then I
would end up losing interest in reading for a while as I struggled
through a bad book. After a few of those I decided that was nonsense and
I should only finish books if liked them. These days I read a book as
long as it interests me. I make it through more than 95% of the books I
start. Most of them get to me after a chapter or two. Last week I made
it half way through a book before I put it down.

Hooters is still around but in fiscal trouble.  Chilis used to feature chili meals, Wing House jumped on the popularity of wings.

But the "guy in Buffalo" concocted a spectacular formula. Naked fry the
with sections, then put into a sauce of vinegar-based hot sauce and
butter. Combining vinegar-based hot sauce and butter can be really good. Rather than Frank's or Tobasco, I like a mix of the super cheap La
Botanera with the pricey Cholula, maybe 4:1. It's nothing to do with cost.

The stock from the turkey carcass is great. It's going to be a shame to
toss all the solids, because they would be great dog food. The bones are
soft, and the meat retains the overwhelming majority of its protein even
after the flavor has been mostly extracted.

good food and service they should not have to rely on some cheap
gimmick to attract customers.  I don't know how many times you can

People like to be entertained and have fun.  Most every chain
restaurant has a gimmick of some wort to grab your attention.  Wing
House, Chili's, Hooters have something to grab attention.

Two problems there.... First of all, I don't think you can grab the
things that get your attention at Hooters. Secondly, Hooters is barely
hanging on. It applied for bankruptcy protection  earlier this year.

Why to people go to the movies when they can just stay home and read
    a book?

Because they are lazy and want to be entertained with little effort.
The same reason a lot of people go out to eat. FWIW... reading is
declining in the US. 42 of American adults read a book last year, down
from 65% just 5 years ago. Only about 10% of American adults read more
    than 20 books a year.

    https://www.newprint.com/blog/book-sales-statistics

I've not read a book in over 5 years. I do read a lot of magazines
though. Newspaper and other news articles.

It's funny that my wife, a retired librarian, seems to read 3-7 novels a
week. Today, we went to two libraries, and that happens most weeks at
least once. While I *wrote* a novel, I only *read* nonfiction. Our son
is a collectable book dealer, amongst all of his businesses. Installing Christmas lights is quite lucrative. Maybe those rich folks think that
the Christmas lights will help them thread the needle (Matthew 19:24).

I can't answer that. I have been to the movies three times in the last

Went twice in the past 45 years. Both times, it was to take the

Like giving RCA credit for phonographs, so?

I used to read a lot when I was a kid. It was a pretty weird scene. When I reached

no longer read about things that are not real. My guess is that there's a >> fundamental difference between kids that read a lot as a kid and adults that spend
they time reading fiction. Therein lies an interesting question.

I read a lot as a kid. Fiction and nonfiction. The books I read now
are almost all fiction, but I read at least one nonfiction book a year.
I read a ton of short nonfiction.

I did not read much as a kid. My reading habit started in my 20s. I read
a lot of fiction. Then I ran into someone who said she reads only non fiction. I thought that sounded like a good idea so I started reading
more non fiction. It got disrupted a bit when I went on a but of a
    classics spree,

The general thoughts on reading is that reading when you're a kid aids in brain development in areas of imagination, empathy, and learning. Reading as an adult mostly has to do with brain maintenance, stress relief, and learning a skill. --- Synchronet 3.21a-Linux NewsLink 1.2

Most people don't live in the ass-end of nowhere. Statistically
speaking, of course. I have two multiplexes within easy driving
distance, but I haven't been to either of them since 2019. To
think the last movie I saw on the big screen was "Aquaman". Still,
    it had very pretty visuals.

I don't see the attraction in sitting in a fetid barn with other
people, watching a movie with the sound turned way too loud. The
last few times I went to the movies, I wore earplugs and could still
hear every damned "whisper" coming out of the speakers.

Try to be constructive Cindy. Can you recommend any movie that might
possibly please her royal Majesty? It's a tall order, I know.

Went twice in the past 45 years. Both times, it was to take the
grandkids so see something like Aladdin that they would enjoy.

Back in my dating days of the 1960s, we'd often go to the drive-in,
    often watched the movie too.

Way back then I did too. I drove a 1959 drop-top Ford rag top. Perfect drive-in car. Lots of room.

But I was young and shy, so I never worked up enough nerve to go into a drugstore and buy fucking rubbers like you did.

Two years ago, I went with two friends to see "Babette's Feast" in

That was the first time I'd been in a theater in at least 35 years.

The first time I saw "Gone with the Wind" was during a high school field trip. The kids got to witness the spectacle and destruction of the Cinerama movie theater in Honolulu. Setting high school kids to a movie about the Old South is not a good idea at all. It was quite the fiasco.
The second time I saw that movie was in the late 80's with my wife. It was the premier of a tri-film, process color, new print of the movie. It was mesmerizing
in the breath-taking beauty of the deep colors and clarity and perfection of the
image. It was shown in the original 4:3 format, not that grainy blown up widescreen monstrosity. The movie, as it goes, was still corny as hell.

It's a great film and Stéphane Audran did some of the cooking herself

I've read that some people have tried to recreate that famous dinner,
but it was hard finding some things. Then there was the expense that

Last year my grocery store, that has an extensive wine selection for

Sad to see Jimi carrying on in a stoned rant. I wish I had
known about him when I saw him live. He had been the guitarist
for King Curtis when he opened for the Beatles in 1965. I was a
14 year old kid raised in a WASP society and didn't have much
interest in soul music. It wasn't until years later that I
rediscovered King Curtis and did a bit of research and learned
that I had seen a then all but unknown Jimi Hendrix.

Given the situation and being a lot more interested in the
Beatles I never took much notice of him. Sometimes performers
make strong first impressions. That was certainly the case with
Jim Carrey when we saw him in a comedy venue very early in his
career. He was outstanding and it was no surprise that we went
on to make it big in comedy and in movies.

The first time I heard these guys was on TV. I was

;-) Yes,they can still be found online and there are a few stores where
they sell them. It's not like a few years ago where every small town had competing movie rentals. Our town library has a pretty good selection of

eBay is your friend when it comes to new or used DVD's and usually

;-) Yes,they can still be found online and there are a few stores where they sell them. It's not like a few years ago where every small town had competing movie rentals. Our town library has a pretty good selection of DVDs to borrow.

Lately I have been mostly streaming.

My brother bought a DVD from eBay. He said the disk was full of drop-outs and glitches. He threw it away. I asked if it had a funny looking cover - like it was done on a color printer. He said it did. That was a counterfeit copy. "yeah"
I suppose it was. Of course, it could have been his player, I guess. As it goes,
DVD's are going the way of dodo burds.
OTOH, I watched a Blu-ray disk of "2001: A Space Odyssey." It was as if I never saw that movie before. The picture was so sharp and clear. The movie was shot in
the late 60's using state of the art cameras. For the first time, it was possible
to see how advanced the whole production was. It was quite a revelation.

I am considering renewing Netflix. I just hate to support their
marketing practices. I had an account that allowed me to use it on a
number of devices. The price went up up up and the number of devices was reduced. Well hell, I have two TVs, a laptop and a desktop. One time I
used to laptop just to check if they had a particular movie and they
next thing I know I get a nastygram telling me I need to upgrade my
account to use it on that device. Now I can get a package that is a
couple bucks a month more than I used to pay but I will have to endure ads.

I use Tubi a lot. When I first started using it there were a couple
10-15 second ads when I started a program and one or two short ads every
15-20 minutes. Now there are 4 30 second ads at the beginning and more
ads every few minutes. There seem to me more and more all the time.

One of the best streaming services is Kanopy. It is free if you are a
member of a library that subscribes to it. They have a great selection
of movies. The drawback is that they have a credit system that limits
the number of programs you can watch. They give you 24 credits at the beginning of the month and most movies are 2 credits and some are more.

You can use an ad blocker or you can download the movie before you
watch it. The download doesn't contain the ads. Worst case, and
slightly advanced: you can screen record the movie. Then you can fast
forward through the ads when you watch it. That requires a bit of
    planning ahead, though.

Most streaming services seem to be fairly cheap. The problem is that
some of them have some of the movies and programs you want and other
services have other programming you want. It's not bad if they are $5-10
a month, but if you have to pay for multiple services it adds up
quickly. It is sort of like the bundles on cable and satellite. Each
bundle is cheap, but each bundle only has one or two channels you will actually watch.

On a relate note, I am having strange satellite problems that arose last night. I have a satellite, two TVs and two receivers. Both had been
working fine and I was getting good signals. Last night I noticed a
problem with the menu. The time on the menu page was an hour ahead of
the current time. For instance, at 8:15 it was showing the programs from
9 pm on. I tried the reset and unplugging it for a minute to force a restart. No luck. Then I went downstairs to see if it had the same
problem but there was absolutely no signal.

This morning I tried looking into it again. I still had no signal on the
set downstairs. I was thinking I would have to adjust the angle on the
post the dish is mounted on. First I checked the upstairs TV. I had a 95 reading on the dish signal. I didn't want to mess with that. Meanwhile
I had called Bell and their welcome to the wait message indicated that
there is a problem with the menu and they are working on it.

Yeah, I found that out years and years ago when I had DirecTV. So many
to choose from and each service had programs that were favorites or were
very interesting. Subscribing to many at around $5 per month soon had
that satellite bill doubled. Plus making any changes to your service
had you locked into another /two-year contract. / At least with Sling
I can make as many changes as I want throughout any billing period and
then cancel immediately without any penalties.

That's basically what I did with Netflix. I watched a lot of good stuff
on there, but then it got to the point where it was taking me a long
time to find something to watch. The last straw was when the made major changes in their packages. I figured the consumers needed to send them a message.

I was getting Crave as part of my satellite movie package but that
service was so challenging to navigate.

On a relate note, I am having strange satellite problems that arose last
night. I have a satellite, two TVs and two receivers. Both had been
working fine and I was getting good signals. Last night I noticed a
problem with the menu. The time on the menu page was an hour ahead of
the current time. For instance, at 8:15 it was showing the programs from
9 pm on. I tried the reset and unplugging it for a minute to force a
restart. No luck. Then I went downstairs to see if it had the same
problem but there was absolutely no signal.

This morning I tried looking into it again. I still had no signal on the
set downstairs. I was thinking I would have to adjust the angle on the
post the dish is mounted on. First I checked the upstairs TV. I had a 95
reading on the dish signal. I didn't want to mess with that. Meanwhile
I had called Bell and their welcome to the wait message indicated that
there is a problem with the menu and they are working on it.

    (1) Ninety five percent of the time, the problem is with the broadcaster.
    (2) Four percent of the time, reboot your device.
    (3) One percent of the time or less, you have a *real* problem.

The upstairs satellite receiver is back to normal. The one downstairs
seems to be toast. I tried it several times today. It just shows an
error message and I cannot even get to the settings or diagnostics. I
will give them a call tomorrow.
