• Saturday Night Dinner? 12/06/2025

What's the dinner fare at your house tonight? It's a bit early for
some folks, but I've decided on macaroni, beef, and tomato as tonight's
meal. I may even fix a small skillet of cornbread to round it out.

Low 40's as the high temperature for this December Saturday and I
managed to pick up a nasty cold last weekend so cooking has been far
from my mind. Cloudy day here and I've not seen Mr. Sun since Monday
so maybe the macaroni meal will brighten my day.

    Sounds good, I'd eat that.

I did baby-back ribs today, I usually do them outside in the
Weber kettle low and slow but it's too damn cold outside for
that today do I did them in the over at 235 degrees for almost
    5 hours.

They were delicious <put them in this morning> but falling off the bone,
which would not be to the liking of some folks, I like them that way,
    but judges don't.

A freezer chowder after finding 2yr-old sole fillets and a bag of
freezer burned shrimp at the back of the drawer. I added them, along
with frozen mixed veggies to a can of clam chowder.
I'm not proud of my actions but nothing went to waste and the result
    was delicious.

looking like salmon patties and mixed veggies. we like
onions so there are usually quite a few chunks of onions

They should be lip smacking good with that /low and slow/ cooking

Surprising sometimes what you can find buried at the back of the
freezer as you scratch your head and think, "I don't remember
buying this." And just as surprising at the tasty results you
get when you find that buried treasure that you think is a lost
    cause. 😋

It's Saturday so we are having burgers. It is technically above
freezing but it feels a lot colder because it is damp. My cook lady does
    not want to BBQ outside.

A few years ago my wife dug something out of the freezer and told me it
was a smoked ham hock I should use up. I didn't remember a ham hock
there but I made the mistake of believing her. I decided to make a
Snert, a Dutch green pea soup. I got started with the other ingredients
so I was committed before I realized the so called ham hock was actually
a pork tenderloin. What the heck. In it went. I can now tell you that
pork tenderloin does nothing good for a soup.

    Chicken thighs and roasted potatoes.

For the longest time, they have always been grilled or, more recently
cooked in the air fryer. Today I decided to do them in the oven. Once
Pyrex dish for both the chicken and potatoes.

The difference? It is easier, just stick it in the oven at 375, no
attention needed. The skin, however, was not as crispy, so a bit of a tradeoff. Made 3 pcs so it will repeat again this week.

Finished up the tomatoes and lettuce in a salad. Green beans tomorrow.

So first you cook a slab of dead animal and then you decide it's not
going to taste good so you douse it with a white sauce. And then you
call the dish after the dead animal?

Lunch today was Turkish food. We ate the usual stuff. Of course, we had to partake
of the lamb. While in town, I took a picture of a building. It might look AI, but
    it's real alright.

    Everything looks wonderful.

That lamb is beautifully cooked. Rosy-pink from edge to edge.

    Yes, the lamb looks fantastic!

Our local Turkish restaurant is a little more homey. No
truffle honey, feta snow, or carob dust.

You could tell by looking at the first pic what the ingredients are?

I figured out what restaurant he went to and looked at their menu.

Freezer burn does not equal "smell". It simply means the food was

um, no, freezer burn is from air being able to get at the
food and drying it out and it certainly does have a bad smell
to me as almost all freezers do. it may be ok to eat but i
will avoid it myself by making sure that foods are properly
    sealed away from the air.

Corn pudding can be good. When we were newly weds we invited my parents
for dinner and my wife decided to try a recipe out of Gourmet Magazine,
a savory corn pudding. The recipe called for 1/2 tsp of curry powder.
Knowing that my parents didn't like spicy good my naive young bride
opted to replace the 1/s tsp of curry with 1 tsp cayenne.

Perhaps interesting anecdote about turkeys.... the people who used to
live behind us had a bit of a petting zoo and a flock of free range
turkeys. For a while one of my son's friends was living with us but he
was not on the list for the school bus so he and my son would walk to
school and take the direct route through the back neighbour's property
and up the hill to the school. Years later this was living and working
in Montreal and had found a really nice and extremely good looking
girlfriend. One day his girlfriend's brother and SiL came to visit and
when the SiL found out the guy was from this area she was curious and
asked where our house was. He didn't remember the address but described
it in terms of the walk to school and being accosted by the turkeys.
She then realized he was talking about her parents' place.

    It's a small world.

Many years ago, I went to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.
Amongst the Wright Brothers home and Thomas Edison's workshop they have
the Harvey Firestone Farm and outbuildings. They had many turkeys walking around and completely used to humans, quite tame. A good-sized group of
adults and several toddlers to first and second grade children were looking
and petting the turkeys. All the turkeys were male.

Don't ask me why but I squatted down to be on level with the birds and I
made a BRRRRRRRRRRRIP! sound. /Immediately/ every one of those turkeys
fanned their tail feathers and walked toward me. I was everyone's favorite 'hen' that day including the turkeys. 😄

    Poor little guy. 🙏

My mother-in-law served me a bowl of those poor little guys swimming in a fiery red broth. They were tumbling around in that terrible, stiff, shape accompanied with tiny whole fishes. It was like a bowl of nuclear Armageddon terror. My wife
told me to eat it and compliment her mom on her cooking. It's likely that I did not do a very good job of it.

What's the dinner fare at your house tonight? It's a bit early
for some folks, but I've decided on macaroni, beef, and tomato
as tonight's meal. I may even fix a small skillet of cornbread
    to round it out.

Low 40's as the high temperature for this December Saturday and
I managed to pick up a nasty cold last weekend so cooking has
been far from my mind. Cloudy day here and I've not seen Mr.
Sun since Monday so maybe the macaroni meal will brighten my
    day.

Lunch today was Turkish food. We ate the usual stuff. Of course,
we had to partake of the lamb. While in town, I took a picture of
a building. It might look AI, but it's real alright.

Sweet, what's the pink stuff with the dates?

Those are olives and the pink stuff is pickled cabbage. I can't say
why they're pink. I don't know a thing about Turkish food. I did have
some date syrup with French toast though. I also had some Turkish
coffee because what's the point of going to a Turkish restaurant if
you're not going to have the coffee?

I bet that was as good as that pussy-pink lamb, in it's own way.

Good looking food, esp. that flatbread.

The lamb was like a tenderloin steak but it didn't taste like beef or pork. It didn't really taste like anything - it was not gamy at all. That was a little strange. The flatbread was good. It's probably real easy to make.

Dinner tonight was a chicken pot pie from Costco. It was certainly tasty.

That does not look like any corn pudding I've ever seen.

    Looks more like cottage pie.

Cottage pie? I thought it looked like Sheperds Pie.

You could tell whether it was beef or lamb inside from _that_
    picture?

Because words have meaning. Corn pudding means this:

There's some variation on the thickener, but basically that's it.

So first you cook a slab of dead animal and then you decide it's not
going to taste good so you douse it with a white sauce. And then you
call the dish after the dead animal?

    Correct.

Incorrect, Leo. We know it's going to taste good, especially with the
nice peppery cream gravy on top!
